a. Shown in the following Figure is the cross section of a landslide slope. One grid box is 25 m x 25 m in size. Please divide the landslide block in 50
m long slices (the first and last grid may be smaller) and calculate the friction angle mobilized in the slope for the geometry shown below
assuming the factor of safety of the slope is 1. Consider the mobilized cohesion as (1 x average depth of sliding plane) in kPa. Use Ordinary
Method of Slice. Unit weight of soil is 17.5 kN/m3. Angle of friction and cohesion of the sliding surface soil are: 150 and 20 kPa, respectively.
b. As a design work, a 12.5 m high buttress was designed at the toe of the landslide. The top surface of the buttress was horizontal. Unit weight of
soil at buttress was 16 kN/m3. The design factor of safety was 1.5. The remaining shear force is to be taken by a series of vertical piles installed
at the second slide from the toe. Please calculate the Force required in pile to yield the design factor of safety.
c. Please calculate the design yield seismic acceleration (seismic acceleration that gives the safety factor of 1) for the slope after the installation
of pile and buttress.
