ASSIGNMENT

14MET31 ENGINEERING MECHANICS

(X is your Roll Number)

1. A block of mass X kg is held in position by strings AB and AC as shown in Fig.1. Draw

the free-body diagram of the block and determine the tensions in the strings T1 and T2.

Fig.1 Fig.2

2. If the mass of cylinder C is 40X kg, determine the mass of cylinder A in order to hold the
assembly in the position shown in figure 2.

3. Three cylinders weighing 12X N and 1.8X cm in diameter are placed in a channel, which
is rectangular in section as shown in figure 3. What is the pressure that the cylinder A
exerts on the cylinder B and C. Calculate the pressures exerted at the other contacts.

Fig.3 Fig.4

4. The frame shown in figure 4 is subjected to a horizontal force = {300 X }. Determine

the magnitude of the components of this force parallel and perpendicular to member AB.

5. The ends of the three cables are attached to a ring at A and to the edge of a uniform 150X
kg plate shown in Figure 5. Determine the tension in each of the cables for equilibrium.
6. Determine the resultant moment of the four Forces acting on the rod shown in figure.6
about point O.

Fig.5 Fig.6

7. Determine the support reactions on the member in figure.7 . The collar at A is fixed to the
member and can slide vertically along the vertical shaft.

8. The truss shown in the figure has four horizontal bays, each of length X m. The top bars
make 20oangle with the horizontal. The truss carries two loads of 40X kN and 20X kN as
shown in figure. Find the forces in each bar. In particular, find the bars that carry the
maximum tensile and compressive forces.
9. Resolve the given eight forces and determine the resultant and direction.

10. Determine the value of centroid for the SHADED area in the following figures

11. Determine the principal moment of inertia for the following figures

12. Determine the value of P to maintain equilibrium
