1. 4 components that are involved in design, production, and utilization of materials:

Processing, Structure, Properties & Performance. How do these components
interrelated? Elaborate.

2. Describe your understanding of why different crystal structures exhibit different

strengths and ductility. Give example.

3. Atomic radius, crystal structure, electronegativity, and the most common valence are
tabulated in the following table for several elements; for those that are nonmetals, only
atomic radii are indicated.

Which of these elements would you expect to form the following with copper:
(a) A substitutional solid solution having complete solubility
(b) A substitutional solid solution of incomplete solubility
(c) An interstitial solid solution

4. For each of edge, screw and mixed dislocations:
(a) describe the dislocation with the help of figures.
(b) note the location of the dislocation line, and
(c) indicate the direction along which the dislocation line extends.

5. Gold forms a substitutional solid solution with silver. Compute the number of gold atoms
per cubic centimeter for a silver-gold alloy that contains 10 wt% Au and 90 wt% Ag. The
densities of pure gold and silver are19.23 and 10.49 g/cm3, respectively.

6. A specimen of ductile cast iron having a rectangular cross section of dimensions 4.8 mm
15.9 mm is deformed in tension. Using the load elongation data tabulated below,
complete problems (a) and (d).

(a) Plot the data as engineering stress (MPa) versus engineering strain (mm/mm).
(b) Determine the tensile strength of this alloy.
(c) Determine the Young Modulus of the alloy.
(d) Determine the Yield Strength of the alloy, use 0.2% offset.

7. Which hardness tests and scales would you use for very thin strips of metal, such as
Aluminum foil? Explain.
