2.3 Cycling of Matter

(part 1)
Energy flows through
ecosystems in one direction,
from producer to consumer.
Matter is anything that has
mass and takes up space.

Matter provides the

nutrients organisms need
to function.
Nutrients are chemical
substances organisms
need to perform life
processes
Nutrients are recycled in
ecosystems.
Nutrients/Elements are
recycled through
biogeochemical cycles
Biogeochemical cycles involve

biological processes,
geological processes, and
chemical processes.
Biological processes-
activities performed by
living organisms.
ex: eating, breathing, burning food,
and eliminating waste products.
Geological processes
are movements of
the earth.
Ex: volcanoes, the formation and
breakdown of rock, and earthquakes.
Chemical and physical
processes
Chemistry and Physical science

Ex: formation of clouds and precipitation,

flow of running water, and lightning.
Biogeochemical cycles pass the
same atoms and molecules
around again and again.

Matter is never created or

destroyedjust changed as it
moves through the cycles.
The Water Cycle
Water continuously moves
between the oceans, the
atmosphere, and land
sometimes outside living
organisms and sometimes
inside them.
Water enters the atmosphere 2 ways:

Evaporation from the ocean or

other bodies of water.

Transpiration- being released

from the leaves of plants
Condensation- When water
vapor cools and turns into the
liquid droplets that form clouds.

Precipitation- (rain, snow, sleet,

or hail) returns water to Earths
surface
Runoff- precipitation that flows
along the surface in until it
enters a body of water

Groundwater- precipitation
that is absorbed into the soil
Aquifers- reservoirs that hold
excess water under ground.
