Test Paper Rectilinear and projectile motion (Maximum mark = 20)

1. A projectile is launched at an angle of 45 to the horizontal. Ignoring air resistance, which pair of
graphs correctly shows how the vertical and horizontal components of velocity vary with time for the
projectile until it lands? (1)

2. The acceleration of free fall on Mars is 3.7 m s2. If an object on Mars is launched vertically
upwards with an initial speed of 40 m s1, its speed after 3.0 s will be (1)
A 11 m s1
B 29 m s1
C 36 m s1
D 51 m s1
3. A student is asked to solve the following problem:
An object is thrown upwards with a speed of 25 m s1. How high will it be when the speed is 12
m s1?
Which equation will allow the problem to be solved in a single calculation? (1)
A s = ut + at2
B s = (u + v) t/2
C v = u + at
D v2 = u2 + 2as

4.

A 65 kg athlete in a long-jump event leaps with a velocity of 7.50 m s 1 at 30 to the

Horizontal, treating the athlete as a point mass, ignoring air resistance, and using g as
9.80 m s 2, calculate:
(a) the horizontal component of the initial velocity (1)

(b) the vertical component of the initial velocity (1)

(c) the horizontal velocity when at the highest point. Explain your answer. (2)

(d) the maximum height gained by the athlete (1)

(e) the total time for which the athlete is in the air. (2)

....

(f) the horizontal distance travelled by the athletes centre of mass (assuming that it returns
to its original height) (2)

(g) the athletes acceleration at the highest point of the jump. Explain your answer. (2)

5. A cricketer bowls a ball from a height of 2.3 m. The ball leaves the hand horizontally with a
velocity u. After bouncing once, it passes just over the stumps at the top of its bounce.
The stumps are 0.71 m high and are situated 20 m from where the bowler releases the
ball.

(a) Show that from the moment it is released, the ball takes about 0.7 s to fall 2.3 m. (2)

..

(b) How long does it take the ball to rise 0.71 m after bouncing? (1)

(c) Use your answers to parts (a) and (b) to calculate the initial horizontal velocity u of the
ball. You may assume that the horizontal velocity has remained constant. (2)

(d) In reality the horizontal velocity would not be constant. State one reason why. (1)
