AITSL standard 6- Engage in professional learning

Focus area 6.3: Engage with colleagues and improve practice

Situation:

I always made sure I received feedback on my lessons from my mentor.

Action:

I would give my mentor my plans before the start of the class, have her oversee
my lesson and go through feedback together at the end of the class. I also
confirmed information with her or asked for guidance whenever I wasnt sure of
something. My mentor was on duty three times during the practicum week, so I
tagged along and used the opportunity to observe how she interacted with other
students and exercised her authority. I also learnt more about my students,
giving me insight into their background learning needs.

Outcome:

By communicating with my mentor I was able to improve on my lessons as I
went. My time management was mediocre. Thanks to her reminders and
warning of the ramifications of going over time, I was able to tweak subsequent
lessons and give students the chance to prepare for the next stage. I also learnt
to think about how to group students better, based on ability. I incorporated a
differentiation exercise in one of my maths lessons so advanced students remain
interested and dont disrupt their classmates.

Comments:

My mentors feedback was paramount to my progress and teaching.
