Music Video Analysis of:

z
Calvin Harris
Acceptable in the
80s
z z
Calvin Harris

Born in 1984, Calvin Harris is a very

current producer in the music
industry.

Acceptable in the 80s was Harris

first UK hit song and follows similar
composition of David Bowies song
Shake It which helps transport the
audience in time through the music
and visuals.
z
Mise-en-Scene

This video is very stylistically driven using bright shots with

contrasting block colours. A lot of the shots are elegant,
enthusiastic dancing shots of a young woman. We also see very
80s style fashion with broad shoulders, frills and big hair dos.
z
Performance

In Calvin Harris music video, we see shots of

him lip singing his song. These would be Jon
Gows song and dance number as were
looking at the artists physical ability in
movement and performance of the song. This
dancing and colour all indicates a dance or
pop music genre which in Goodwins notes
explains the content of the video.
z Narrative

While there is no clear narrative; instead seemingly a jumble of

random bursts of moving colour, there is a vague story. There
seems to be narratives in the following: hairdressing, science,
and doctors. Even these scenes are carried out in an 80s style
of colour and odd surreal objects and equipment.
z
Narrative
The narratives seem to join together through
particular objects. From the previous scene
the green jelly is carried on through to this
scene. In this scene it is used to style a
womans hair.
z
Narrative

And in this scene we see the object removed from

the animal in a previous scene is used in the
cooking for the baby in a future scene.
z

To conclude this video, I am highly

attracted to the stylistics used. The
minimalistic dcor and lots of block
colour is very much what Id like to
achieve in my outcome, but without a
studio and lots of time/money to
paint my outcome will be something
very different but Ill keep this in
mind!
