M Series

The goal of this document is to understand the cancels that occur when
combining arrays of MILO, MICA and MELODIE. Because the physical nature
of the enclosure box (size) the drivers are not physically aligned; in other
words, the sound doesnt travel the same distance to the front of the cluster.
This produces a difference between the time arrivals that produce comb filter.

MILO MICA Transition

MILO Impulse (in this example: 30.94 ms)

MICA Impulse (in this example: 30.72 ms)

There is a time difference of 0.22 ms; that translated into distance to a

sound speed of 343 m/s (20C) it is 7.54 cm.

Comb filter when combining them:

The time difference between them (0.22 ms) produces a first cancel around
2,270Hz (for this frequency 0.22 ms is equal to 180 of its time period).

3 de 3

Solution:

To apply an Electronic Delay in MICA to align MICA with MILO. The time
arrivals become equal and the comb filter is gone.

MICA MELODIE Transition

MICA Impulse (in this example 30.72ms)

MELODIE Impulse (in this example 30.42ms)

There is a time difference of 0.30 ms; that translated into distance to a

sound speed of 343 m/s (20C) it is 10.29 cm.

The time difference between them (0.30 ms) produces a first cancel around
1,667 Hz (for this frequency 0.30 ms is equal to 180 of its time period).

There is a time difference of 0.22 ms (7.54 cm) between MILO and MICA
and of 0.50 ms (17.15 cm) between MILO and MELODIE.

Comb filter when combining them:

The time difference between them, in this case occurs between the three
systems, Mica versus Milo (0.22 ms), M'elodie versus Mica (0.30 ms) and
Melodie versus Milo (0.50 ms) too, but in this last case the level differences
(10 dBs) produce ripple.

Solution:

To apply an Electronic Delay in MICA and MELODIE in order to align them

with MILO. The time arrivals become equal and the comb filter is gone.

Why not make the drivers physically align?

The sound radiated by the smaller box will be reflected in the bottom part of
the upper box making a reflection that will be added (with a delay) respect
the direct sound causing strong comb filter in the higher frequencies.

The real world

In the real world, the time differences between models change in relationship
with the position where the measure is taken, but in any case, the problems
persist. In other hand the comb filter will be very critical where the system
transitions have the same amplitude.

If we insert the delays obtained before, a big part of the cancels will be gone.

And using an Array Correction, the system maintain a good response:
