1. (20 points) Velocity of the fluid at a point due to a mass source near origin can be approximated

by u = C r 2 er where is the distance of the point from the origin and C is a constant. Show
that this velocity satisfies the continuity (mass conservation) equation for the incompressible
fluids. (Hint: The continuity equation in the spherical coordinate system is given in Table 5.6 in
the text book.) What is mass flow rate of the fluid leaving the surface of a sphere of radius
centered at origin in terms of C and density of the fluid? Sketch the flow field.
2. (30 points) Velocity of an incompressible, Newtonian fluid with viscosity between two parallel
plates separated by distance H at a point is given by

(, , ) = + ( ), = = 0 (0 < < )

where V and G are constants and y is the distance of the point from the lower plate.
Determine the force per unit area along the x-direction that the fluid exerts on the two
plates. Sketch the flow field. Is this flow driven by the pressure gradient as well as the
motion of a plate? If, so determine the pressure gradient in the fluid.
3. (20 points) Velocity induced by a long rod of radius R rotating around its axis in a
Newtonian fluid with viscosity is given by

u = R 2 r 1 e ( R r < )
Determine the torque required (per unit length of the rod) to rotate. (Hint: The torque can
be estimated using T = 2 R 2 f . Explain why?)
4. (30 points) The velocity field for the oil-water mixture being sheared is shown in the
diagram below. Determine the ratio VI / V in terms of ho , h, w , and o . For what value
ho / h will the flow rates of oil and water be equal? Estimate this quantity for the crude oil-
water mixture at 20o C. (You may use Google to look up typical viscosities of crude oil and
water.)
