1. Find the rule that determines each of the following sequences. Use this rule to find
the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth term of each sequence.

(a) 2, 4, 6, 8, (c) x, x2 , x3 , x4 ,
1 1
(b) 4, 2, 0, 2, (d) 2, 1, , ,
2 4
2. Write the first five terms of the sequence using the given rule. In each case the
initial value of the index is 1.

(a) an = (n + 1)(n 1) (c) an = nn

(1)n1
(b) an = (d) at = |1 2t |
n3
3. Write the first four terms of the sequence whose nth term is given
   n
n+1 1n (b) (1) n1
cos
(a) (1) 4
2+n

4. (a) The sum of three numbers in G. P. is 56. If we subtract 1, 7, 21 from these

numbers in that order, we obtain an arithmetic progression. Find these num-
bers.
(b) The product of three numbers in G. P. is 216. Let 2, 8, 6 be added to them.
The resulting numbers form an A. P.. Find the numbers.
(c) If 7 times the 7th term of an A.P. is equal to 11 times its 11th term, show that
the 18th term is zero.
(d) Find the sum of the squares of the first n natural numbers.
(e) Find three real numbers in G. S. whose sum is 30 and the product is 216.
5. Evaluate
x sin(x) ln(sin(2x))
(a) lim (c) lim
x0 x3 x0 ln(sin(x))

2 x1
(d) lim x ln
x x+1
ex esin(x)
(b) lim (e) lim (sin(x))tan(x)
x0 x sin(x) x0
