BYSIEWICZ RELEASES FINAL VOTER

TURNOUT FIGURES FOR AUGUST 10TH
STATEWIDE PRIMARY
SECRETARY OF THE STATE REPORTS THAT NEARLY 25% OF REGISTERED
DEMOCRATS AND NEARLY 30% OF REGISTERED REPUBLICANS CAST BALLOTS
IN THE PRIMARY; CALLS FOR REFORMS TO BOOST VOTER TURNOUT

HARTFORD: Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz today released the final voter
turnout figures for the statewide primaries that took place on Tuesday August 10, 2010,
in which 24.88% of registered Democrats and 29.59% participated. Secretary Bysiewicz
is re-issuing the call for several election reforms that will boost voter turnout for future
primary elections, including placing the primaries in June rather than August, enacting
Election Day Registration and Absentee Ballot reform that will result in early voting.

“Obviously, turning voters out to a primary in the middle of the summer when many
people are on vacation is a challenge,” said Secretary Bysiewicz, Connecticut’s chief
elections official. “I believe there is much more we can do to make our elections easier
and more accessible for Connecticut voters. One step we could take is move the primary
date from August to June, a time when more voters are likely to pay attention.”

Bysiewicz added, “We should also make the simple reform of enacting Election Day
Registration, which would allow any interested and eligible voters to register and vote at
the same time. Other states that have taken this step have seen their voter turnout rise by
close to 10% and judging from the thousands of voters who use the Presidential ballot
every four years, there is definitely a demand for this reform. In addition, enacting ‘No
Excuse’ absentee ballot voting would allow thousands of Connecticut residents to vote
early and a time when it is convenient for them.”
Though the voter turnout figures for the two major parties are considerably lower than the
figures for the August 2006 Democratic Primary turnout of 43% or the February 2008
Presidential Preference Primary turnout of 53%, the 2010 primary turnout was very
similar to other mid-term primaries where open seats for Governor or U.S. Senate are on
the ballot. For instance, in 1994, the last time both Democrats and Republicans held
primaries for Governor in the same year, Democratic turnout was 26% while Republican
turnout was 25%.
