Fall 2016-2017
Problem Set 1

Problem 1: An oil with a viscosity of 0.4 Pa.s and density of 900 kg/m 3 flows in a pipe of
diameter, D = 0.02 m.
a) What pressure drop, P1-P2, is needed to produce a flowrate of Q = 2x10-5 m3/s for a pipe length
L = 10 m, if the pipe is horizontal?
b) What should be the angle, , between the pipe axis and the horizontal plane if the oil is to flow
through the pipe at the same rate as in part a, but with P1=P2?

Problem 2: A liquid of specific weight = 8.80 kN/m3 flows by gravity through a 30 cm tank and
a 30 cm capillary tube at a rate of 1.2x10-6 m3/s, as shown in the figure below. Neglecting
entrance effects, compute the viscosity of the liquid.

30 cm

D= 1.22 mm
30 cm

Q= 1.2x10-6 m3/s
Problem 3: The tank-pipe system of the figure below is to deliver at least 11 m3/h of water at
20C ( =998 kg/m3 and = 0.001 Pa.s) to the reservoir. What is the maximum roughness
height allowable for the pipe?

4m L= 5 m, D= 3 cm
