What does STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) have to do with ISY and OSY programs?
How does it affect programs and staff? STEM can be integrated into the classroom and youth activities. In
doing so, programs may also wish to look for ways to strengthen staffs STEM content knowledge. Each of
these needs can be addressed by joining our STEM for Youth in Literacy and Workforce Programs cohort.
To participate in the STEM cohort individuals must register for no less than two sessions.
X Marks the Spot: Updating Your Algebra Skills for Tutoring or Teaching Youth
Description: Do you have a youth that needs math tutoring, but youre not quite sure how to help
especially with this new way they do math? How do you ensure the experience will be both effective and
positive for each of you? Join our STEM cohort, by attending this and other great sessions. This session of
our STEM cohort will focus on deepening your content knowledge in algebra and algebraic thinking.

Tutor Your Math Tutoring Skills: Strategies for Instructing Struggling Youth in Mathematics
Description: Tutoring a young person who struggles with math can be a daunting experienceespecially if
you dont feel confident with the new way they do mathematics. What are some strategies you could employ
to help the youth feel more confident in their skills? Join our STEM cohort, by attending this and other great
sessions. This session of our STEM cohort will focus on strengthening participants mathematical tutoring
skills.

Hard to Teach Does Not Mean Impossible: How to Approach Hard Science Concepts with Struggling Youth
Description: Learning science can be challenging for youth, some likening it to learning a new language and
vocabulary. How can we engage our youth to meet their needs? During this session you will be introduced
to researched-based strategies that support conceptual change in science education to answer these
important questions. An example from the biological sciences will be used to illustrate the strategies.
