DIGITAL ECONOMY

Digital economy refers to an economy that is
based on digital computing technologies. The
digital economy is also sometimes called the
Internet Economy, the New Economy, or Web
Economy.
Increasingly, the "digital economy" is
intertwined with the traditional economy
making a clear delineation harder.

In the last decade of the 20th century.


Nicholas Negroponte (1995) used a
metaphor of shifting from processing atoms
to processing bits. "The problem is simple.
When information is embodied in atoms,
there is a need for all sorts of industrial-age
means and huge corporations for delivery.
But suddenly, when the focus shifts to bits,
the traditional big guys are no longer
needed.
Do-it-yourself publishing on the Internet
makes sense. It does not for paper copy." In
this new economy, digital networking and
communication infrastructures provide a
global platform over which people and
organizations devise strategies, interact,
communicate, collaborate and search for
information. More recently, Digital Economy
has been defined as the branch of
economics studying zero marginal cost over
the Net.

IMPORTANCE
The digital economy is developing rapidly
worldwide. It is the single most important
driver of innovation, competitiveness and
growth, and it holds huge potential for
European entrepreneurs and small and
medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
Unfortunately, only 2% of European
enterprises are currently taking full
advantage of new digital opportunities.
New digital trends such as cloud computing,
mobile web services, smart grids, and social
media, are radically changing the business
landscape, reshaping the nature of work, the
boundaries of enterprises and the
responsibilities of business leaders.
These trends enable more than just
technological innovation. They spur
innovation in business models, business
networking and the transfer of knowledge
and access to international markets.

Challenges for the


sector in the EU
Two billion people are currently connected
to the internet and by 2016, this number will
exceed 3 billion almost half of the worlds
population.
Businesses that fail to get digitally connected
will become excluded from the global
market.
The huge potential of the digital economy is
underexploited in Europe, with 41% of
enterprises being non-digital, and only 2%
taking full advantage of digital opportunities.
New digital opportunities create new
business opportunities. Now that youth
unemployment has risen to over 20% in the
EU (and to over 55% in Spain and Greece),
the growth prospects offered by the digital
economy in Europe are promising.
Other regions of the world are already ahead
of the game. The digital economy now
contributes up to 8% of the GDP of the G-20
major economies, powering growth and
creating jobs.
Although many EU entrepreneurs are
already leveraging digital technologies to
create successful businesses and significant
economic impact, that number could be
increased.
This is especially true given that European
small businesses grow two to three times
faster, and create new jobs when they
embrace digital technologies. With the aid of
technology, small businesses can also go
global from day one, reaching overseas
markets and talented potential employees.
New technologies also hold potential for the
manufacturing industries. The digitisation of
manufacturing can transform the entire
industry, offering prospects for the re-
location of industry in Europe.
The digital economy will reach EUR 3.2
trillion in the G-20 economies and already
contributes up to eight per cent of GDP,
powering growth and creating jobs.

The world is changing fast. We are at the
dawn of the Fourth
Industrial Revolution, which will bring
together digital, biological and physical
technologies in new and powerful
combinations.
The World Economic Forums Networked
Readiness Index is a key indicator of how
countries are doing in the digital world.
It measures how well an economy is using
information and communications
technologies to boost competitiveness and
wellbeing.
These are the 10 countries that the 2016
Index found to be best placed to make the
most of the new world.
Singapore is at number one. The ranking is,
to a large extent, the result of strong
government commitment to the digital
agenda.
Gains from information technology are
widely shared in Singapore, and it makes
excellent use of digital technologies to
provide access to basic and government
services, and ensure that schools are
connected.
Finland ranks at number two. The country
has extremely good access to the latest
technologies as well as venture capital, and
its businesses are highly connected.

Norway moves up to fourth place ahead of


the United States, which has also risen this
year. The US stands out in terms of its
extremely favourable business and
innovation environment, which has led to
one of the most agile and digitized business
sectors in the world.

The United Kingdom stays at number eight.


Perceived venture capital availability and UK
government procurement of advanced
technologies have improved in the last 12
months.

The index shows that some countries have


made significant improvements on last
year's ranking. Italy has risen 10 places, the
Slovak Republic 12 and Kuwait 11.
