Excel Lesson 7

Section A. Define the following Vocabulary (8 pts):

1. Complex formulas A complex formula is a formula with more than one operation

2. Order of operations Order of operations are in parentheses, exponents calculation,

multiplication and division, and addition and subtraction

3. Relative references Relative references are when the same calculation appear in 2 rows.

4. Absolute references Absolute references are formulas that include a $.

Section B. Explain how to do the following (12 pts):

1. Explain how Excel calculates complex formulas. (hint: Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally)

Excel calculates complex formulas by solving stuff in parenthesis first then exponents then

multiplication then division then addition finally subtraction.

2. Explain how to create and copy a formula using relative reference: First select the cell where

you want to enter the formula then enter the formula then press enter to create then to

copy you select the cell you want to copy then click copy.

3. Explain how to create and copy a formula using absolute reference: First select the cell you

want to enter a formula in then type an equal sign then click the cell that contains the first

value then type the first mathematical operator type $ then enter the column letter then

type $ and then type the row #.

4. Explain how to switch between relative and absolute cell references when writing a formula.

To switch between relative and absolute cell references you write a absolute then you copy

the reference and make it relative.

Section C. Critical Thinking (6 pts):

1. Explain the difference between relative and absolute cell reference. Absolute reference do

not change when they are copied or filled and relative does.

2. Why is it important to know the order of operations when creating complex formulas in

Excel? It is important because then you dont make a mistake and that can ruin everything.
