Coming Events
Monday, August 13, 7:30 PM. Meeting at the Museum of Arts and Sciences, 4182 Forsyth Road in
Macon. Join us to hear Carolyn Johnson, Assistant Refuge Manager at Piedmont National Wildlife
Refuge speak on the impact of the pine beetle infestation on red-cockaded woodpeckers. Johnson will
also provide an update on Bachman’s sparrows at the refuge and activities at Bond Swamp NWR.
Saturday, August 18, 8:30 AM. Rolling field trip to search for shorebirds migrating far from shore. Meet
at the office of Dr. Ty Ivey, 1902 Forsyth Street, Macon. The group will carpool from there to areas that
historically offer sightings of shorebirds traveling through the central part of Georgia. The rolling field trip
may take the group as far away as Marshalville in Macon County.
NOTE: Ocmulgee Audubon Society requires that children and youth 15 years of age and younger be
accompanied by a parent or guardian on all OAS field trips.

Field Notes and Sightings


Since this is the first newsletter after our summer days later they birded Piedmont NWR and found

OAS took a field trip to Ocmulgee National
Monument on Saturday, June 16. The group Paul Johnson reported Mississippi kites nesting
enjoyed a morning with 50 species including in his backyard in Bibb County, using the same
Mississippi kite, yellow-throated warbler, nest as last year (6/10). He also reported white-
prothonotary warbler and painted bunting. The breasted nuthatch (5/25), 2 blackpoll warblers
group was delighted to find an active Acadian (5/19 & 5/28), and a late house wren singing
flycatcher nest near the road. (5/28), all from Lake Wildwood.

Other sightings reported since the last newsletter Jim Gilreath sighted an anhinga flying overhead
include the following: in Houston County (6/9) and reported hearing
northern bobwhite in the area several times in
Trey McCuen reported hearing a blackpoll warbler late May and early June.
in Bibb County (5/15) and he observed a little blue
heron at a small lake in western Bibb County (5/20). Dot Freeman from Blairsville took a bird break

A SWIFT NIGHT OUT! Coordinator for her presentation on Georgia’s Important
Bird Areas. It’s always nice to hear a reminder about the
value of our natural environments.
Once again, for the seventh year, the
Driftwood Wildlife Association is hosting “A
Swift Night Out.” The event invites
interested folks to keep their eyes to the
skies at dusk and watch for areas where
