EASTMaN COUNTING SYSTEM: Method of counting rhYthm


with a mixture of numbers and syllables

There are 3 basic rules for counting simple meters in the eastman system.

1. Count the number on the beat

2. Count and (+) on the DIVISION OF THE BEAT

3. Count e or A on the subdivision of the beat

Here is a break down of the counting for each of the three levels in 4/4 time.

QUICK tip: it is easiest to learn and apply this system when you write the counting
to your music above or below the notes on the page so you can practice seeing
and performing the rhythms with the correct counting to avoid mistakes.
