Lesson idea implementation: This is a simple introduction to the various types of vertebrates and how they
have their offspring, whether live birth or laying eggs. A few other distinguishing features for each
classification are also included. This is a quick exercise, taking the student no more than a few minutes. The
teacher can assess the students comprehension of the differences in each type of animal. Students may then
be asked to search for other examples of each group and present their findings to their neighbor or the whole
class. This will allow interaction between students as they try to find the best example for each group. This
simple presentation can lead into more involved lessons including visits to the zoo or exercises on web sites
like BrainPop which can reinforce what they have learned.
After they have a grasp on the characteristics of each group, each student can contribute to the slide show.
They can add pictures of animal, more descriptions of the animals in each group, and even record their voices
instead of the teachers. I can let them know if their selections are correct and help with any additions to the
presentation. The final product should be much more thorough and the various voices will surely get a great
reaction.
