CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) are task to produce globally competitive

graduates of business management equipped to perform duties and responsibilities in

the workplace and community.

Countries all over the world are being industrialized due to expansion of large

conglomerates or organically grown businesses. Popular career options are Sales

manager, Marketing manager, Financial analyst, Business consultant. Graduates of a

bachelors degree in business are qualified for entry-level supervisory roles within

various industries and the driving factor for enrolling in this degree is the good pay.

Hence, universities and colleges usually have a great population of students in school of

business.

The former commissioner Romulo L. Neri issued a memorandum stating that

Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) should design and develop curriculum that is

suitable to its own peculiar needs, resources and circumstances in conformity with the

general framework provided by CMO no. 39, s. 2006. CHED encourages innovation in

business education for relevance and keep pace with the current realities (CHED,

2008).
With the growing population of Tagum City and nearby municipalities NDC-TFI

has experienced growth in its enrollees for the past three years notwithstanding the

effects of the calamity brought by typhoon Pablo in the Compostela Valley Province.

Tagum City has been a strategic area for universities and colleges due to its

accessibility and numerous commercial establishments. The researcher, being one of

the college instructors, sees the need to offer additional major courses in Bachelor of

Science in Business Administration.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

University and Colleges Development

Education becomes more widespread in the 19th century. Universities and

colleges developed contemporary forms and invokes nationalism with the belief that

each nation needed an educational system that conforms with the countrys values and

objectives (Moore, 1994).

Higher Educations Role

One of the contributors of economic development is higher education. The

colleges and universities today allocated fiscal, physical, and human resources and

created entrepreneurship systems within the institutions to advance economic

development (NIU Outreach, 2005).It is further stated that Senior administrators provide

strong, visible leadership designed to

create a quality workforce by growing, training, and attracting the finest talent

support current business and industry

improve learning and teaching from pre-school through graduate school

take strong and visible roles in regional initiatives

disseminate research and promote technology transfer

enhance the technology infrastructure

promote livable communities

employ a diverse workforce

Problem Facing Higher Education

Information Age came in the late 20th century. There seems to be a great

demand for universities and colleges though many countries do not have the financial

resources to build educational institutions and hire competent faculty. Potential and

competent faculty finds the corporate world more attractive career path rather that

teaching. On the other hand, to keep abreast with the current trend of modernization,

older universities need to upgrade their laboratories and invest in computers which

entail costs (Moore, 1994).

Funding on Educational Institutions

Budgets are increase in education to invest in research to support K-12 project.

DepEd aims to raise the quality of education in the Philippines by ensuring that school-

age students are enrolled in schools. Aside from increase in budget for secondary

education, Php8.3 billion allocations for Commission on Higher Education in the 2017

budget to cover the tuition of students in State Universities and Colleges (Mateo, 2016).
The Business of Higher Education Institutions

It is said that education is expensive. Often times students from affluent families

get admitted to universities while poorer students must settle for less-expensive and

lower-quality education. Operating universities and colleges cost money and requires

expertise. At the same time, Educators believed that there is a significant connection

between university education and a well-paying job. Students from marginalized

background seek admission to state universities and colleges. Students who can afford

university education enroll to private higher education institutions. This trend creates a

demand for private higher education institutions to offer undergraduate courses with

different specializations without causing an erosion of the undergraduate curriculum

(Moore, 1994).
CHAPTER III

METHODOLOGY

In this study, the researcher will be using Descriptive Correlation. The descriptive

part will be used for the discussion of the profile of the respondents while the correlation

part will be used for the discussion of significant relationship between the independent

variables (BSBA courses offered) and dependent variable (perceived preference of

potential enrollees) is about identifying the preferred courses of potential enrollees. In

this research, personal interviews were conducted. Pertinent school documents were

acquired upon the researchers request to serve as source of secondary data.
