Scale: San Jose Municipality

Project: San Jose Central Drainage/Sewage System and Treatment

Background: In several years that typhoons hit the Municipality of San Jose Antique. Flooding have been
the problem of the capital town of Antique and it hasnt stop anymore until now.

Some streets are flooded in common rainy days and more on typhoons. The primary concern is the
drainage that hold the rainwater. The questions there is:

1. How long will it hold waste and rain waters before it will cause flood?
2. What is the solutions to address this problem?
3. If new innovation of technologies be applied how will it be sustainable?
4. If new drainage channel be provided? How will it be maintained?

Target Sustainability Goals: Sustainable Drainage System

For a cleaner and safer San Jose, the central drainage/sewage will be provided for treatment and to be a
solution for the flooding problem in the municipality. This facility will be powered by solar energy to
assure the continuous operation of this system with less expense.

Design Brief:

The aim was simple: to take all the excess rainwater from typhoons and floods away before it can cause
any damage. The way it was implemented is also simple, build a big drain.

A 2 giant sinkholes has been dug into the ground, each designed to catch the runoff and overflow from
nearby drainage and rivers. The sinks range up to 9m in height and 6m diameter.

During heavy rains and typhoons, volume of flood and rainwater pours down these sinkholes and falls
into the next engineering marvel a huge concrete pipeline acting as an underground river which
transports the water through a tunnel to the central reservoir.

Finally the water reaches what is known as the Central Reservoir, a reservoir almost 80m long, 40m
wide and 18m high. It then pumped out directly to the sea if it is near full. But the water remaining at
the storage level are stored and used on agricultural purposes.
