Short story analysis for Hop-frog


1) Theme: Even the oppressed can have great power. This is shown by the dwarfs revolt
against his bourgeoisie masters.
2) Characters: The dwarf protagonist. The king antagonist. These characters come head-
to-head by the end of the story, as the jester seizes and tortures the king.
3) Plot: Dwarfed jester is oppressed, so he revolts against his captors by coating them in tar
and getting revenge.
4) Style: Poes typical, flowery language. Multiple references to alcohol, multiple references
to dark topics. Its a gothic story.
5) Setting: An upper-class palace/castle. Seems to be a social commentary on the upper
class vs. lower class.
6) Motifs: The color gold is recurring, as well as alcohol.
