21st /22nd OCTOBER 2017
TWENTY NINTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Three men were discussing how much of their

income they give to God. The first said, I usually
draw a line on the ground and throw all my
money over it. Whatever falls to the left of the line is mine, and whatever falls to the right
belongs to God. The second said, Well, I wouldnt dare to claim that I deserve as much
as God. I always draw a circle and throw my money over it. Whatever falls inside the
circle is mine, and the rest is Gods. The third said, No, no, no, you guys have got it all
wrong! You shouldnt be drawing lines at all when it comes to God! See, I always throw
all my money up to the heavens and yell, God, take whatever you want! Whatever he
throws back down, I know is mine.
Todays gospel ends with that famous phrase of Jesus, Give to Caesar what belongs to
Caesar and to God what belongs to God. A smart answer in response to a trick question
from the Pharisees... but one which inevitably raises another question for all of us: How
do I know what belongs to God?
We dont really know how sincere each man was in the joke above, or how much self-
interest there actually was... but in a way, there is a grain of truth in that story. We cant
really draw a line to separate what belongs to God and what belongs to us. All that exists
ultimately belongs to God: all that we possess the worldly goods, our talents, our
health, our time, our very life comes from Him. We really should throw all that we have
to the heavens for God to take whatever He wants! And in funny way, God really doesnt
need anything, and He does let everything fall back down. He gives everything back to
us, everything we have, to manage as we see fit.
I believe that God doesnt want us to leave the decision of how much we give to Him
down to chance or to a fixed rule (like the 10% tithe in some churches). No one can tell
us what the correct amount of money, time, energy, etc. to give to God is. Todays
responsorial Psalm reads, Give the Lord glory and power. At the end of the day, it is
up to each one of us how we choose to glorify God with everything that we have and to
let Him have power over our lives by letting Him be the deciding factor in the big and
small decisions we make each day. Beyond the question of how much money we give in
the collection during the offertory, let us give heed to those words with which we are
sent out at the end of mass: Go in peace, glorifying God by your life!
Have a blessed week! Sr. Devy

Message from Fr Joe: I am enjoying catching up with family, cousins and exploring the
Smoky Mountains... and looking forward to seeing them all later in the week.
