Portfolio Maths Assignment
Portfolio Maths Assignment
LESSON OUTCOMES:
-Students are informed as to what is expected of them
-Students are put into pairs
-Students are assigned the question that they will investigate
SELF ASSESSMENT:
-Reflection
TEACHING PROCEDURE:
TIME STEPS COMMENTS
3. EXPLORATION/PRACTICE(group/individual)
15 mins -As a class brainstorm the topics/questions that we want
answered
-Once we have enough topics, assign each pair a question
to investigate
-Get each group to record their names and the topic they
are investigating onto a piece of paper
Select and trial methods for data collection, including survey questions and recording
sheets (ACMSP095)
LESSON OUTCOMES:
-Students will be able to determine which data collecting method best suits their task
-Students will plan their data collecting method
STUDENT ASSESSMENT:
-Completed plans
SELF ASSESSMENT:
-Reflection
TEACHING PROCEDURE:
TIME STEPS COMMENTS
5. EXPLORATION/PRACTICE(group/individual)
20 mins -Give students time to complete their plans in their books
AIM:
Collect data, organise into categories and create displays using lists, tables,
picture graphs and simple column graphs, with and without the use of digital
technologies (ACMSP069)
Construct suitable data displays, with and without the use of digital
technologies, from given or collected data. Include tables, column graphs and
picture graphs where one picture can represent many data values (ACMSP096)
LESSON OUTCOMES:
-Students partake in data collection methods
-Students collect data that will answer the question theyre investigating
-Students record data in an effective manner
STUDENT ASSESSMENT:
-Collected data
SELF ASSESSMENT:
-Reflection
TEACHING PROCEDURE:
TIME STEPS COMMENTS
7. EXPLORATION/PRACTICE(group/individual)
20 mins -Send students off to complete their data collection and
quickly finish any data collecting plans if need by
-If students finish early ask them to start looking at their
data, sorting through it and predicting what they think their
graphs might look like based on the results
-If any groups need to do a class vote ask them to sort
their data first and complete the class votes before the
end of the lesson
AIM:
Identify questions or issues for categorical variables. Identify data sources and plan
methods of data collection and recording (ACMSP068)
Select and trial methods for data collection, including survey questions and recording
sheets (ACMSP095)
Collect data, organise into categories and create displays using lists, tables, picture
graphs and simple column graphs, with and without the use of digital technologies
(ACMSP069)
RESOURCES:
-Graph paper
LESSON OUTCOMES:
-Students will be able to effectively collect data to answer a specific question
-Students will be able to effectively record data
STUDENT ASSESSMENT:
-Completed table/tallies
SELF ASSESSMENT:
-Reflection
TEACHING PROCEDURE:
TIME STEPS COMMENTS
9. EXPLORATION/PRACTICE(group/individual)
20 mins -Give students time to collect their data
AIM:
Construct suitable data displays, with and without the use of digital
technologies, from given or collected data. Include tables, column graphs and
picture graphs where one picture can represent many data values (ACMSP096)
LESSON OUTCOMES:
-Students will be able to effectively create graphs based data theyve collected
-Students will be able to properly label a graph
STUDENT ASSESSMENT:
-Completed graphs
SELF ASSESSMENT:
-Reflection
TEACHING PROCEDURE:
TIME STEPS COMMENTS
11. EXPLORATION/PRACTICE(group/individual)
20 mins -Give students time to complete their graphs
-If any students finish their graph, ask them to complete
the type of graph other than the one theyve completed
-If they finish that too, ask them to complete a picture
graph with a different key
12. CONCLUSION (whole class share/reflect)
5 mins -Get students to put their sheets in their books and pack
up
LESSON PLANNING
LEARNING AREA: Mathematics: Data Representation & Interpretation
AIM:
Construct suitable data displays, with and without the use of digital
technologies, from given or collected data. Include tables, column graphs and
picture graphs where one picture can represent many data values (ACMSP096)
LESSON OUTCOMES:
-Students can successfully display data they have collected using a graph
-Students can properly label a graph
STUDENT ASSESSMENT:
-Completed graphs
SELF ASSESSMENT:
-Reflection
TEACHING PROCEDURE:
TIME STEPS COMMENTS
13. EXPLORATION/PRACTICE(group/individual)
20 mins -Give students time to complete their graphs
-Students that finished early should have collected extra
data from their buddy class, as them to graph these results
and compare them with their original graph

LESSON OUTCOMES:
-Students will complete or nearly complete their graphs
-Students will be able to describe to results of the data they collected / displayed
-Students will learn to create a graph digitally, using Excel
STUDENT ASSESSMENT:
-Completed graphs
-Completed statements
-Completed digital graph

TEACHING PROCEDURE:
TIME STEPS COMMENTS
15. EXPLORATION/PRACTICE(group/individual)
20 mins -Send students off to complete their graphs
-Select 6 students to teach digital graphing to, explaining
to these students that they will then become my experts
and help teach other students how to do it once they are
done
-Show these students how to create a graph using Excel
on the laptop / TV screen
-Send students to get laptops and complete their own
graphs
-Ask these students to pass the laptops on and teach other
students to do the same once theyve completed theirs
