Project 2

Writing a Scary Story

Guidelines

1. Develop the premise.

a. Your greatest fears

Think about the things that scare you.
Some examples:
Fear of ghosts?
Fear of being alone?
Fear of clowns?

b. Fear scenarios
Think about different scenarios in which you could experience your greatest fears.
Some examples:
You are stuck in an elevator with a dead person.
You are alone in a dark parking lot.
You are home alone late at night when the lights go out.

c. Transform your fear into the setting of the story.

Use the setting to trap the character of the story and force him/her to confront his/her
greatest fear.
Example:
It was late at night. Paul was alone in a big dark parking lot, looking for his car when he
heard footsteps behind him. He turned around and saw a scary looking clown holding a
baseball bat
2. Develop the characters.
You need a protagonist, a villain and maybe one or two support characters. Use this chart
to organize their information as in the example.

Support Support
Protagonist Villain
Character 1 Character 2
Name Paul
Gender Male
Age 17
Personality Brave
Appearance Tall
Occupation UTEC student
Other Practices karate

3. Organize the events in chronological order.

Paul was alone in the parking lot.

He heard footsteps behind him.

He turned around and saw...

4. Write your story.

Now you have all the information you need to write your mystery/horror story. Your story
should have a title, an introductory paragraph (orientation), three body paragraphs
(beginning event, complication and resolution), and a short concluding paragraph with an
unexpected ending and a final comment.

Dont forget to use connecting words like but, when, so, then, after that, next, etc.

Use the following structure.
