What is urbanization?

Refers to increasing number of people that


live in urban areas

Closely linked to modernization,


industrialization, and the sociological process
of rationalization

In the year 1800, only 3% of the worlds population lived in urban areas.

Now, 54% of the worlds population lives in urban areas.


What are some positive
outcomes of urbanization?

Increased population
Agricultural modernization
Paid labor
Allows rural areas to reduce population
density
Diversity
More infrastructure
What are some negative
outcomes of urbanization?

Failure to plan - leads to poor


infrastructure like housing & garbage
collection systems
Neglect poorly decided roads - leads
to traffic congestion & potential injury
High crime rates
What does the future
hold with urbanization?

Urbanization can cause a great deal of strain on the society.


When you do not meet your simple necessities such as
safety, food, clean water, and shelter, crime can occur.
With urbanization on the rise, it is predicted that more
crime and more deviance will emerge.

The percentage of the worlds population that live in urban


areas will increase to 66% by 2050 & the population is
predicted to surpass 6 billion by 2045.
