Education

Brian is a member of the Neighborhood Academic Initiative, NAI. This is a


rigorous 6th to 12th grade program that highly qualified students attend every
school day during the first period. They also are mandated to attend every
scheduled Saturday from 8 am to 2.30 pm without fail. In it he has received
intervention classes in math science and English. He has had to meet the rigorous
attendance and performance requirements or to be of good conduct failure to
which his membership to the program would have been terminated. This program
allows students to get scholarships primarily to the University of Southern
California, and other local colleges. Brian has always worked to maintain the
requirements and is therefore still in the program
Brian is also a member of the NSHSS(National Society of High School
Scholars):NSHSS scholars are committed to the pursuit of academic excellence
and embody the values of Mr. Nobles family tradition of peace and excellence.
Brian has had to maintain academic excellence in all his classes to remain in this
prestigious society

Work experience
As volunteer of the USC Joint Educational Project Readers Plus Program , he
provided individualized tutoring and mentorship aid for 1-2 elementary school
students per week in the years 2011 to 2014

As a computer lab assistant atFoshay Learning Center, Brian was responsible for
computer upgrades to maintain optimum performance of both the hardware and
software for 35 desktops and numerous laptops within the years 2011 to 2016. He
had to maintain workstations in a school computer lab.

He was also a volunteer for USC Kicks For Kids between 2013 and 2014
Kicks for Kids is a service organization dedicated to promoting a
healthy and active lifestyle by helping children with special needs interact and
enjoy themselves in the greater Los Angeles area.
In the Foshay Band Brian is the first chair Trumpet Section Leader since 2009. He
leads band students during all the practice sessions and during performances. The
band undergoes weekly sectionals to improve performance quality.

Extra curricular activities;

Brian has been a marathon runner and finisher in the program for LAUSD
called students run LA. He has prepared for and participated in all traia and full
marathons since 2015. I can attest to this as He always shows me his medals.
In the year 2016-2017, Brian participated in the regional Los Angeles Science
Bowl

The student has been a member of the very vibrant and rigorous science bowl
team in the 12th grade. The Science bowl is a Jeopardy style competition between
a limited number of schools at both the local and national level. Here in Los
Angeles, It is sponsored by the LADWP. In the completion students are given
questions on Math, Physics, Anatomy, Earth Science, Biology, Chemistry, and
Astronomy. For preparation, Brian and other students met every school day to
practice and used social media to continue practicing after school. This proved to
me that he was very keen on Math and the Sciences.
He has been involved in boxing since the year 2012.
He is also a UNICEF ambassador.

Brian is bilingual in English and Spanish
Technology he has a good command if internet surfing and Microsoft office.
He is very socially responsible and is a very effective communicator.
Awards

In conclusion, I highly recommend Brian Portillo to any prestigious institution of


learning. I also recommend him as deserving scholarships and awards. I do this
based on my knowing him as extremely focused, hard working both in and out of
class, respectful and of excellent conduct. He is very pleasant, humble and sociable.
He is driven to excel in all his endeavors. I say this as his current chemistry teacher
and Science bowl coach.
