HOW AUSTRALIANS

HELPED END APARTHEID

Australias anti-apartheid activists recognised by the new South Africa

A stunning exhibition, Memories of the Struggle: Australians Against Apartheidwill open in Johannesburg
on 2 November 2017 at Constitution Hill, formerly the gaol where Nelson Mandela and Gandhi were
imprisoned. It records the Australian contribution to the collapse of apartheid, especially the Springbok
tour of 1971 as well as the work of Desmond Tutu and Sekai Holland, who were honoured with the Sydney
Peace Prize.
This multimedia exhibition is launched by the Premier of Gauteng Province, Mr David Makhura and the
Australian High Commissioner, HE Mr Adam McCarthy.
The Australian delegation includes Anthony Abrahams, one of the Wallabies who campaigned against
the tour; Meredith and Verity Burgmann, who famously stopped the Springbok game in Sydney, for which
Meredith was given a two month gaol sentence; Ken Davis and Frances Letters, who were both arrested
during sporting tour protests; and Jane Singleton, former Chair of the Australian National ANC Support
Committee. Jane Singleton and her company undertook much of the work to stage and co-ordinate Nelson
Mandelas historic visit to Australia before the South African election in 1990.
The delegation will be joined by nine Aboriginal leaders from across Australia and two Maori representatives,
through the Atlantic Fellows Social Equity Program for social change. As well as spending time with the
Australian delegation and visiting the historic sites on apartheid and slavery, they will meet with the
indigenous South African San community.
Jane Singleton says, This celebration of activism fits so well with the current campaigns around same sex
marriage and Adani. It proves you CAN make a difference. Principled and gutsy Australians helped make a
difference to the lives of hundreds of thousands of South Africans.
