John Stuart Mill
Although at several points in his writings Mill seems to be concerned with the history of
historiography, his thoughts on this issue were neither systematised nor explicitly
presented. Mills views are partially elaborated in his review of Michelets History of
France published in the Edinburgh Review on January 1844, and et passim in other essays.
In discussing Michelets historical essay, Mill provides a brief but illustrative sketch of
how historical knowledge is historically developed. This sketch is ontologically related to
his Comtean idealism according to which scientific thought is subject to perpetual
intellectual transformations. He believes that historical science and thought is changing
thus always becoming more possible; not solely because it is better studied but because,
in every generation, it becomes better adapted for study. According to his scheme, we
may observe three distinct periods in historical writing: The first stage is characterised by
the mere translation of historical sources and is superficial in its epistemology, the second
attempts to regard former historical ages with the eye of the contemporary observer while
the third one has as its aim not simply to compose histories, but to construct a science of
history. The paper examines Mill tripartite distinction while it attempts to connect his
theory of history with a modern social theory in understanding past and contemporary
events.

through a lens of commons: exploring the varied identities of the field
The flourishment of Social Solidarity Economy (SSE) can be seen as the product of two
separate but interconnected forces, namely an impulsive societal response to find answers
or solutions to the multiple crises experienced, as well as the emergence of long-standing
movements and communities exploring new models of economic, social and communal
organization as alternatives to the mainstream hegemony of the market competitive
economy. These two forces have united in the exploration and establishment of initiatives
based on three broad elements:
Economic relations based on solidarity and reciprocity
Production processes based on collective ownership and management of resources
Work organisation based on horizontal relations, equality and collective decision-
making
Consequently, an important process underpinning both the vision and the practice of
solidarity economy has been the creation of commons. A framework of commons can help
look more deeply into the social relationships and political processes that lie beneath the
generalized term of alternative economy and encourage a more critical engagement. The
objective of this presentation is to propose an original methodology for the deconstruction
of the generalised concept of social solidarity economy which is built around issues
underpinning the organisation of commons. Through the methodology it is possible to
create a typology of the varied identities of the field, and explore the potential/ or lack of,
for social transformation.
