A Ready Reckoner
A successful entry into a U.S. based M.S. needs a lot of meticulous planning in advance. This information is primarily meant for engineering graduates. If you have decided to do an M.S. after your B.E., you should start preparing right from the second year. A typical schedule would look like this: Second year of B.E. - Have a passport ready or apply for one - Gather enough study material and information on GRE, TOEFL etc. - Start preparing from the fourth semester itself. Third year of B.E. - Book your GRE, TOEFL dates sometime during July with the TOEFL date lagging GRE by a week. - Decide on the program (area of interest) and the universities based on various factors. - Take your GRE and TOEFL between your sixth and seventh semester. Final year of B.E. - Based on your GRE and TOEFL scores, start applying to your chosen universities before December (during your seventh semester). - After you receive admits, decide which university you are going to join. - After you receive your I-20, get all other documents ready. Also block your airline ticket through a travel agent. - This is also the time for applying for an educational loan or scholarship. Post B.E. - Book for a visa date sometime during June (before the last week). - Keep your fingers crossed! - After getting the visa, Take an student insurance and get other materials ready.

What is a GRE Test? In a computer-adaptive test the computer screen displays one question at a time which is chosen from a very large pool of questions categorized by content and difficulty. The first question is always of a medium difficulty and each subsequent question is determined by your responses to all the previous questions. In other words the CAT adjusts itself to your ability level - you will get few questions that are either too easy or too difficult for you.

Structure of the New GRE

Here are the changes that give you a better test experience*: New preview and review capabilities within a section New "mark and review" feature to tag questions, so you can skip and return later New ability to change/edit answers within a section New on-screen calculator for the Quantitative Reasoning section New questions that better reflect the skills you'll need for graduate and business school New answer formats, including tasks such as numeric entry and highlighting a sentence in a passage to answer a question Less reliance on vocabulary out of context, more emphasis on reading and no antonyms or analogies

Retaking GRE
GRE policy states you may take the computer-based GRE exam once per calendar month. If you test more than once per month, your new scores will not be reported and your test fee will be forfeited. All your scores will be written in the report as long as they are valid ( less than 5 years.) thus, if you take the GRE for the 10 times in 3 years ( not more than 5 times in a year and one time in a month) all your scores will be reported. If you even cancel you score, then they will indicate that this person on this date and in this place ( Place of exam- code of it) took the GRE and canceled his/her exam. Its a varying policy, but the Universities may choose to look at the best score, the average or a combination of both depending upon the strength of the other parts of your application. So you really cannot choose to send "Any Particular" scores. The University will know all your GRE scores in the last 5yrs I believe, for which they keep the record of your examination valid.

GRE Experimental Section:

In addition to the three scored sections namely: Verbal, Quantitative and AWA, there may be one 'experimental' section that looks like one of the scored sections; but does not count toward your score. ETS uses the experimental section to pre-test the questions that will show up on the scored sections of future GREs. It looks just like one of the scored sections, so you won't be able to identify it. Never even try to identify this section. A test-taker may get any of the following GRE CAT combination: 1. AWA (Issue-Argument) Verbal (experimental) Verbal (Real) Quantitative 2. AWA (Issue-Argument) Verbal (Real) - Verbal (experimental) Quantitative 3. AWA (Issue-Argument) - Verbal (Real) Quantitative (experimental) - Quantitative (Real) 4. AWA (Issue-Argument) - Verbal (Real) Quantitative (Real)- Quantitative (Experimental) A test taker may also get a direct test pattern without an experimental section. 1 AWA Verbal Quantitative 2 AWA - Quantitative - Verbal.

TakeGRE.com & GREword.com GRE Research Section:

Some other students have also received research sections instead. The research sections are clearly marked out, and usually involve a bit of money to be earned (if you perform creditably). It is research section for which you bid for US$ 200.00. This one too doesn't count toward your score. If you solve the research section, then the performance in this section will not affect your official score and vice-versa is also true. What is the timing of classroom coaching? Why does the revised test have an on-screen calculator? The calculator will have four functions (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) and a square root. For paper-based tests, calculators will be provided at the test center for use during the test. You may not bring your own calculator. Will scores still be reportable for five years?
