Tips for Effective Studying
Preparing for your exams begins by being an active participant in class. This means focusing
on the content the teacher presents, asking relevant questions and engaging with the
material. It also means doing your homework consistently.
Do not wait until the night before an exam to study start preparing now to avoid last
minute stress and cramming.
Find the study method that works for you. Use highlighters, diagrams, lists, graphs, flash
cards, mnemonics, past exam papers, self tests and revision activities in order to help you
prepare.
Never try to pull an all-nighter before an exam. What you may gain from extra study time
wont compensate for the loss of alertness and concentration due to lack of sleep.
Set up an efficient study area at home an area with a desk and chair where you can leave
all your notes and books. Plan this area carefully; keep adequate supplies of stationery and
paper at hand.
Dont try to study around distractions such as the television or with your cell phone on and
next to you. Leave these for your break times.
Allow yourself regular breaks during studying. Set times before you begin studying and stick
to those times.
Be physically prepared:
o Get a good nights sleep (at least 8 hours)
o Eat a good breakfast each morning
o Make sure you bring enough stationery (pens, pencils, erasers, calculator etc.)
o Pack your bag the night before
o Remember your ID card
When studying and writing take care to maintain good posture, do not slouch.
Read all instructions carefully.
Check your work if you have time.
Plan your time carefully when writing an exam.
If you go blank, skip the question and move on.
Dont panic when others finish writing early, there is no reward for finishing first.
Use relaxation techniques to deal with anxiety:
o Tell yourself that you are in control
o Focus on your breathing, take slow, deep breaths
o Remind yourself that you have prepared for this exam
o Focus on flexing each major muscle group individually and then relaxing those
muscles. Start with your toes, and gradually work your way through each muscle
group. Focus especially on your shoulders and neck.

Good luck!
