08.01DESCRIPTIONOFPROPULSIONSYSTEM
TheTeslaModel3propulsionsystemconsistsofadriveunitandahighvoltagebatterypack.Thedriveunitcontainsasingleelectric
tractionmotor,afixedgearbox,andthedriveinverter.
TheModel3driveunitisconnectedtotherearwheelsviaafixedratiotransmissionthroughtheindependentsuspensionequippedrear
axle.

8.02DESCRIPTIONOFMOTOR(s)

Themotorisa3phaseACinternalpermanentmagnetmotorutilizingasixpole,highfrequencydesignwithinvertercontrolledmagnetic
flux.

8.03 DESCRIPTION OF BATTERIES

ThebatterypacksusedintheTeslaModel3isoneofthemosttechnicallyadvancedlithiumionbatterypacksintheworld.Using
customizedautomotivegradelithiumioncells,theTeslabatteryachievesunmatchedenergydensityandenablesthelongrange
capabilityofthevehicle.Thelowprofileflatpackagingenablesanefficientandfunctionaloccupantarea.Thebatteryhasreplaceable
activeshortcircuitprotectionthatisaccessiblewiththebatteryinthevehicleviaanaccesspanel.Asetofswitchesinsidethepack
disconnecthighvoltagefromthepositiveandnegativeterminalsonthebatterypackwhennotinuse.Todisabletheswitchesfrom
closingduringvehicleservice,the12Vpowerfeedcanbedisconnectedinthevehiclefuseboxoratthelowvoltagewiringconnectorinto
thebatterypack.ThebatterycontrolsystemconsistsoftheBatteryMonitoringSystem(BMS)whichcontrolstheswitches,measures
packcurrentandvoltages,electricalisolationofthebatteryfromchassisgroundandmonitorscellvoltagesandmoduletemperatures
fromtheBatteryMonitorBoards(BMBs)installedoneachofthemodules.Thebatteryisratedat400Vandiscapableofdeliveringin
excessof1000Amperes.Thebatterymassislessthan500kg.

Theselfdischargerateofthebatteryislikelytobelessthan4%permonth.

TheTeslabatterypackcontainsanintegratedcoolingsystemtoensurethattheindividualcellsaremaintainedat,orcloseto,their
optimumoperatingtemperature.Incorporatedinthevehiclesystemisaninlineheatingelementtoraiseandachillertolowerthepack
temperature,whenrequired.

08.03.04Definitionofendoflife
ThebatterypackendoflifeshallbedeterminedbyTeslaslocalservicecenterswithProperinspectionandtestmethods.

08.03.05Descriptionofbatterydisposalplan
Teslaslithiumionbatterypacksdonotcontainheavymetalssuchaslead,Cadmium,ormercury.Theyareexemptfromhazardous
wastedisposalstandardsintheUSAundertheUniversalWasteRegulations.However,theydocontainrecyclablematerials,andTesla
planstorecycleallbatterypacksremovedfromvehicles.

TeslahighlyrecommendsthatallbatterypacksbetakentolocalTeslaservicefacilitiesandrecycledbyTeslaorTeslaauthorized
agencies,sothatthebatterypackscanberecycledinasafeandefficientmanner.

Ifdisposingindependently,withoutreturntoTesla,thentheownermustassumeresponsibilityforrecyclinginasafeandlegalmanner.
Ifanownerdoesassumethisresponsibility,Teslarecommendsconsultingwiththeappropriatelocal,stateorfederalauthoritiesto
determinetheappropriatemethodsfordisposalandrecycling.Keepinmindthatdisposalregulationsmayvarydependentonlocation.

ThedriveinverterperformsseveralcriticalfunctionsintheTeslaModel3includingtorquecontrol,powerandtorquelimitenforcement,
andstatusmonitoring.Thedriveinverterisanintegralpartofthedriveunit.

Thetransmissionisafixedratio,mechanical,transverselymountedgearboxwithintegralfinaldriveunit(transaxleconfiguration).

Theshiftleverismountedtothesteeringcolumn.Theleverhasfivedetentsoneneutral,onereverse,onedrive,onecruiseorautopilot
(ifequipped).Selectingeitherforwardorreversepositionenablesdrivecurrenttothemotortogeneratetheappropriatetorque.There
isnophysicalreversegearneeded.

TheamountofRGBtorquegenerateddependsontheacceleratorpedalpositionlargestwhentheacceleratorpedalisfullyreleased,
decreasingasthepedalisdepressed,reachingzerotorquewhenthepedalreachesitsneutraltorqueposition(apositionthatisa
functionofvehiclespeed).ThemaxRGBdecelerationalsovariesdependingonvehiclespeed.ThemaximumRGBprofileisdefinedasa
targettotaldecelerationrateasafunctionofvehiclespeed.ThemaxRGBprofileistailoredtoeverydaydrivingconditions,which
typicallyexhibithigherdecelerationratesatlowerspeeds.

Whenthebatterypackisnearmaximumcapacity,regenerativebrakingfunctionwillbelimitedtoensurethemaximumcapacityofthe
batteryisnotexceeded.AnyRGBlimitingwillberampedingraduallytoallowthedrivertoadapttothechangingRGBperformance.
Whenthebatterypackisbelow0degrees,RGBwillnotbeallowedbecausethebatteriesarenotratedtoacceptchargebelowthis
temperature.AnyRGBlimitingwillberampedingraduallytoallowthedrivertoadapttothechangingRGBperformance.Thevehicle
notifiesthedriverofanylimitsontheregenerativebrakingfunction.

08.08DESCRIPTIONOFVEHICLEELECTRICALSUPPLYEQUIPMENT(CHARGER)
TheTeslaModel3iscapableofacceptingenergyeitherfromapermanentfacilityinstalledattheownerslocationorfrommanyreadily
availablepoweroutletswhenontheroad.

ThededicatedHighPowerConnector(HPC)canbepurchasedseparatelyfromthevehicleandacertifiedelectricianwillconfirmthe
capabilitiesoftheresidentialsupplycircuitatthevehicleownerslocation.ConfirmationofasatisfactoryresidentialelectricalSupplywill
leadtotheinstallationofahardwiredHPCunit,thiswillexpeditevehiclechargingatthemostefficientrate.TheHPCcansupply
availablecurrentuptoamaximumof80ampsandincorporateselectronicsystemsthatcommunicatewiththevehiclecontrolsystems
toindicatethemaximumavailablecurrentsothatthevehiclecandeterminetheamountandrateofchargerequired.

Chargingatrateslowerthanorequalto32Acanalsobeachievedviaamobileconnector.Theuniversalmobileconnectorisincludedas
standardinthepurchaseofeveryModel3andisanindividualcablethatconnectsthevehicletoanyavailabledomesticpoweroutlet
andcandelivercurrenttoamaximumof32Amps.TheMobileConnectorincorporatessimilarelectroniccircuitryastheHPCto
communicatewiththevehicleandmanagethechargingprocess.

ThevehicleisalsocapableofacceptingDCcurrentupto525Afromanoffboardcharger(Supercharger).

08.08.01Properrechargingprocedures
ThechargingsystemadjustsautomaticallytotheavailableAClinevoltage,frequencyandcurrent,withinlimits.Thechargingsystemin
thevehicleworksinconjunctionwitheitherofthethreeexternalchargingstations;thepermanentlyinstalledHPC,thepermanently
installedsuperchargerortheportableMobileConnector.

AnytimetheEVInletdoorisopened,thevehiclewillpreparetoenterCHARGEstate.Oncetheuserconnectseithersupplycabletothe
vehicle,thechargingsystemsignalstothevehiclethatitisreadytodeliverthecharge.Thevehiclelocksthecableontothevehicleand
thenindicatesthatitisreadytoacceptenergyandchargingwillcommence.Failureofanyofthesestepswillresultinfaultconditionand
lackoffullchargingcapability.Vehiclecouldstillchargeonlowpowerifhandlelockisnotengaged.

11.01Starting

TheModel3doesnothaveatraditionalstarterswitchandinsteadhasasmartentrysystemforgreatersafetyandcustomer
convenience.Thesmartentrysystemcomprisesofasmartkeycard,aweightsensorembeddedintothedriverseat,andthebrakepedal.

ENTERING

AnNFCcard(whichreplaceskeyfob)orphoneappcanbeusedtounlockthecarbyscanningthecardonthebpillar.
Afterasuccessfulscanonthebpillarorcenterconsole:
a.VehicleisauthorizedtoDrivewithinareasonabletimeperiod.Timeperiodisextendedbasedonadditionaluserinteractionwhich
include:driveropeningtheirdoor,driversittingdown,driverclosingtheirdoorwhileseated.
b.Iftimeperiodisexceeded,uponbrakepress,instructdrivertorescanNFCcardonthecenterconsoletoreauthorizeDrive.
c.AccessoryModefunctionswillbeavailablewithouttheuserhavingtorescantheirNFCcard.

LOCKING

AnNFCcardorphoneappshouldbeusedtolockthecarbyscanningthecardonthebpillar.ThereisnopassivelockingwithNFCcards
(cardoesnotautolock).

STARTING

Ifsuccessfulinteractionbetweenthekeycardandvehiclecontrolleroccurs,thesystemdeactivatestheimmobilizer.Immobilizer
deactivationonlyhappensafter2conditionsaremetbelow.ThevehiclethenentersaccessorymodeanalogoustoaACCpositionona
conventionalICengine.Inthismode,lowvoltage(12V)issuppliedtothevehicleallowingoperationoftheradioandotheraccessories
connectedtotheaccessoryrail.

HighVoltage(HV)necessarytoenablevehiclepropulsionisenabledonlybytheclosingofthecontactors,whichcanonlybe
triggeredwhenthefollowingconditionsarebothsatisfied,

1.SmartkeycardisauthorizedandkeycodeisvalidatedAND

2.Brakepedalisdepressed.

Byrequiringbrakepedalactivation,alongwiththeappropriatekeycode,thissystemensuresthesafetyofvehicleoccupantsbynot
allowingselfmobilityofthevehiclewithoutthedriverprovidingpropercontrolinputs(i.e.,servicebrakeactivation)andappropriate
driverauthorization(i.e.,presenceofthekeycode).Ifeithertheservicebrakeisnotactivatedorthekeycodenotpresent,thevehicle
controllerwillnotclosetheconnectorsandselfmobilityisnotpossible.

Ifthebrakepedalisdepressedandtheproperkeycodepresent,thedriverailwillactivate(immobilizerdeactivates)andallowsthe
transmissiontobeshiftedoutofPark.

STORAGE

HIGHVOLTAGEEXPOSURE
IfoneoftheTeslaproductshasbeenvisiblydamagedoritsenclosurecompromised,thenpracticeappropriatehighvoltagepreventative
measuresuntilthedangerhasbeenassessed(anddissipatedifnecessary).

FIREFIGHTINGMEASURES
Ifafireorexplosionoccurswhenthebatterypackischarging,shutoffpowertothecharger.Incaseofburninglithiumionfires,floodthe
areawithwater.Thewatermaynotextinguishthem,butwillcooltheadjacentbatteriesandcontrolthespreadofthefire.CO2,dry
chemicalandfoamextinguishersarepreferredforsmallfires,butalsomaynotextinguishburninglithiumionbatteries.Burning
batterieswillburnthemselvesout.Virtuallyallfiresinvolvinglithiumionbatteriescanbecontrolledwithwater.Whenwater
isused,however,hydrogengasmaybeabyproductwhichcanformanexplosive
Mixturewithair.LITHX(powderedgraphite)orcopperpowderfireextinguishers,sand,drygrounddolomiteorsodaashmayalsobe
used.Thesematerialsactassmotheringagents.

Damagedoropenedcellsorbatteriescanresultinrapidheating(duetoexothermicreactionofconstituentmaterials)andthereleaseof
flammablevapors.Water(andotheritemslistedabove)dispersesheatwhenappliedinsufficientquantitytoafire.Extendedheat
exposurecanleadtoignitionofadjacentcellswithapotentialcompleteenvelopmentofthebatterypackifnotcooled.An
extinguishedlithiumionbatteryfirecanreigniteduetotheexothermicreactionofconstituentmaterialsfrombrokenordamagedcells.
Toavoidthis,removesourcesofignitionandcooltheburnedmassbyfloodingwith(orimmersingin)water.Firefightersshouldwear
selfcontainedbreathingapparatus.Cellsorbatteriesmayflameorleakpotentiallyhazardousorganicvaporsifexposedtoexcessive
heat,fireorovervoltageconditions.ThesevaporsincludeHF,oxidesofcarbon,aluminum,lithium,copper,andcobalt.Additionally,
volatilephosphoruspentafluoridemayformattemperaturesabove230Fahrenheit.Nevercutintothesealedbatterypack
enclosureduetothehighvoltageandelectrocutionrisks.

Ifadecisionismadetofightabatteryfireaggressively,thenlargeamountsofwatershouldbeappliedfromasafedistancewiththe
intentoffloodingthebatterypackenclosureascompletelyaspossible.Alternatively,ifadecisionismadetofightabatteryfire
defensively,thenthefirecrewshouldpullbackasafedistanceandallowthebatterytoburnitselfout.Firecrewsmaychoosetoutilize
awaterstreamorfogpatterntoprotectexposuresorcontrolthepathofsmoke.

FIRSTAIDMEASURES
Undernormalconditionsofuse,theconstituentbatterycellsarehermeticallysealed.Contentsofanopen(broken)constituentbattery
cellcancauseskinirritationand/orchemicalburns.Ifmaterialsfromarupturedorotherwisedamagedcellorbatterycontactskin,flush
immediatelywithwaterandwashaffectedareawithsoapandwater.Foreyecontact,flushwithsignificantamountsofwaterfor15
minutesandseephysicianatonce.Avoidinhalinganyventedgases.Ifachemicalburnoccursorifirritationpersists,seekmedical
assistance.Seekimmediatemedicalassistanceifanelectricalshockorelectrocutionhasoccurred(orissuspected).
