Join thousands of Victorian

families for
Walk to School 2017!
Get ready, get set for Walk to School 2017!
St Mary's has joined the hundreds of primary schools across Victoria for a fun month of walking, riding and scooting to
and from school. By participating, we have a chance to win some great prizes! So every time our local families walks,
rides or scoots to and from school during October, you increase our schools chance of winning!

Student challenge cards

Dont forget to complete your challenge card each day you walk and also mark yourself off your classroom calendar,
once your challenge card is complete hand it into reception. We will then get them to Council so they will go into the
draw to win some great prizes.

Prizes include
3 x $150 sport voucher
5 x Bounce Essendon pass
5 x $50 Westfield voucher

Student poster challenge

Council will be holding a Poster challenge for all participating students. The winning artist will receive a sports store
voucher valued at $150. The poster should show:
students and their friends walking to school
something funny, pretty or interesting that students have seen while walking to or from school
a slogan about why kids should walk to school
if students are too far to walk all the way, their poster could highlight park and walk locations

To enter, students should complete their poster and put it up in a visible position at school, then
email transport@mvcc.vic.gov.au with their name, phone number, school, a photo of their poster (a photo taken on a
phone is fine) and its location. The three most creative designs will be framed, displayed at a Council venue and on
Facebook, and three Council staff will choose a winner.
The winning artist will receive a sports store voucher valued at $150.

About Walk to School

Every October, VicHealths Walk to School encourages Victorian primary school kids and their families to walk, ride or
scoot to and from school every day. Its a great way for the whole family to increase their physical activity levels. Plus,
it is a chance to enjoy more time with your kids and meet other local families along the way.

Along with the health benefits, it also reduces traffic congestion, saves on parking, helps us connect with family and
friends and saves the environment! Part way is okay! If you cant walk the whole way, why not try parking the car a
few blocks from your school and walk, ride or scoot the rest.

Last year, more than 144,000 kids and their families took part in the program walking the equivalent of two return trips
to the moon and with your families help, we can make 2017 our biggest year yet!

There are so many great reasons to participate in Walk to School this October and were excited to be part of the fun
because getting active is even more fun when we do it together!

EDUCATION IN FAITH SPHERE

Dear God,
We give thanks for places of simplicity and peace.
Let us find such a place within ourselves.
We give thanks for places of refuge and beauty.
Let us find such a place within ourselves.
We give thanks for places of natures truth and freedom,
Of joy, inspiration and renewal,
Places where all creatures may find acceptance and belonging.
Let us search for these places:
In the world, in ourselves and in others.
Let us restore them.
Let us strengthen and protect them and let us create them.
May we mend this outer world
According to the truth of our inner life
And may our souls be shaped and nourished
By natures eternal wisdom.
Amen.

5 Unwritten Social Rules

At a Glance
Many children with learning and attention issues have trouble picking up on social rules.
Kids who dont understand or follow social rules may feel like they dont know how to fit in.
You can help your child learn and practise key social skills.
When theres a line at the post office, you wait your turn. If you bump someone with your grocery trolley, you apologize. And
when other people are talking, you let them finish speaking before you respond.
Most of us do these things because we understand the unwritten social rules that guide how we interact with each other.
Kids with learning and attention issues, however, often have trouble learning and following basic social rules. Your child may
not notice or understand these rules. Or he may lack the self-control needed to follow them.
Helping your child understand social expectations is a good first step toward helping him meet them. Here are five key social
rules that can be challenging for kids with learning and attention issues:

Social Rule #1: Meet and greet politely.

Say greetings, introductions and goodbyes.
Politely offer and receive compliments.
Be able to start and finish conversations.

Social Rule #2: Take turns talking.

Listen when others are speaking and look them in the eye.
Dont interrupt.
Respond appropriately and at the right time.

Social Rule #3: Pay attention to others.

Stop what youre doing so you can listen.
Read peoples emotions through their body language and facial expressions.
Change your behaviour to match what other people are doing, such as quieting down with the rest of the room.

Social Rule #4: Think about others before acting.

Dont touch without asking.
Dont cut in line.
Wait your turn.
Stand a comfortable distance away when talking.
Social Rule #5: Cooperate with others.
Follow directions when youre asked to.
Ask for help when you need it.
Apologize when necessary.
Be flexible and open to new ideas.

What Happens When Kids Dont Follow Social Rules

When kids dont follow social rules, others may think theyre self-centred or uncaring. Other kids may find their behaviour
annoying and back away. Your child may find himself being left out. Kids with poor social skills may be bullied by other
children or viewed by adults as being disrespectful or rude.
Learning and attention issues can affect your childs social life in different ways. For example, ADHD may cause kids to speak
and act impulsively. Nonverbal learning disabilities can affect the ability to read peoples moods and reactions.
Language disorderscan make conversation difficult.
9 about social skills and practicing them together.
Parents and teachers can help children with these issues by talking

How You Can Help Your Child

You can start by breaking down social rules in ways your child can understand and
practice. Role-playing games can be a good way to model appropriate behaviour
and help him practise responding to different social situations. You can also use
your childs favourite TV shows to focus on reading body language and other social
cues.
Helping your child understand social expectations is a good first step
toward helping him meet them.
Parenting Coach has strategies for helping your child work on interacting, fitting in
and other everyday challenges. Be sure to praise him for successful social
interactions, too. Giving your child positiveand very specificfeedback can
reinforce the behaviours you want him to repeat.
If your childs social difficulties persist, you may want to consider having him join
a social skills group at school or in the community. With practice and support, your
child can learn to connect with others successfully.
