HYPERTHYROIDISM

Hyperthyroidism is the condition that occurs due to excessive production of thyroid hormone
by the thyroid gland.

CAUSES:

Graves disease, an auto immune disorder is the most common cause of hyperthyroidism.

Other causes of hyperthyroidism include:

excess iodine, a key ingredient in T4 and T3


thyroiditis, or inflammation of the thyroid, which causes T4 and T3 to leak out of the
gland
tumors of the ovaries or testes
beningn tumours of the thyroid or pituitary gland
large amounts of tetraiodothyronine taken through dietary supplements or medication

SIGNS & SYMPTOMS:


Common symptoms of hyperthyroidism include

Weight loss
Rapid heartbeat, irregular heartbeat or pounding of the heart
Nervousness, anxiety or irritability
Tremors (trembling of the hands and fingers)
Changes in menstrual patterns (usually lighter flow, less frequent periods) in women
Increased sensitivity to heat
Increased perspiration
Changes in bowel patterns
An enlarged thyroid gland (called a goiter), which can appear as a swelling at the base
of the neck
Fatigue
Muscle weakness
Difficulty sleeping
Increased appetite
DIAGNOSIS:

The diagnosis of hyperthyroidism will be confirmed by laboratory tests that measure


the amount of thyroid hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3)and
thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) in your blood.
