SITE VISIT REPORT

1. INTRODUCTION

A site visit for the Construction Management subject for BE CIVIL Students was organized by
Prof. Piyush Bhandari, Prof. A. R. Take, Prof. A. H. Shirke & Prof. B. D. Kanawade on 20 th
March 2015. The location of the site visit was, Administrative Block construction site, Vikhe
Patil Foundations Engineering College Campus. A total of 76 students attended the site visit.
The agenda of the visit consist of in-depth explanation by the contractor and project engineer on
the operation of the project. At the end of the session, there was a questioning and answering
session between the students and the host. Countless valuable information was shared among
both parties regarding the visit especially on the operation of the project. The purpose of this site
visit is to provide the students with sound knowledge on how the Construction management
principles being handled throughout the whole project. The understanding of the project
documentation can be a good basis for the students in order for attaining perceptive of project
management in real life situation. Furthermore, these site visits can assist the students to gain
knowledge for the preparation of their future career.

2. Objective

The objectives of the site visit are: - To have a better understanding of the basics of the
construction process. To gain more knowledge about the practical aspect of the construction
techniques in comparison to the theory aspect in books and its application on the site. To have an
experiment to actual working environment on site including uncertainty circumstances in
weather condition. To have the ability to communicate with the construction team members on
site and to see the importance of teamwork in the building team. To witness the usage of
construction equipment on site including mechanical plants. Able to explore and identify various
types of building materials and technology on site. To get aware about the importance of safety
on site and understanding of safety problems and site conditions. Able to recognize the items
measurable for sub-structure and reinforced concrete frame works.

3. PROJECT SUMMARY

Below is the summary of the project:

Project Title: Administrative Block, Padmashree Dr. Vithalrao Vikhe Patil College of
Engineering, Ahmednagar

Contract Value: Rs. 368.51 Lakhs

Contract Period: 6 Months

Physical Progress : Ahead (60.13%) As per 1 Feb 2015

Client : Padmashree Dr. Vithalrao Vikhe Patil Foundation

Architect: AND Studio, New Delhi

Contractor: M/S Ashoka Construction, Ahmednagar

4. Technical Observation

On the 20th March, Our Subject teacher arranged visit to the construction site. This site visit was
very fruitful experience which was about a 3 storey Administrative building with up to date
modern amenities which I never been there before although I visited a few of construction site.
There were approximate 60-70 students present for the site visit. Around 3.30pm, Mr. Y. A.
Yeole (Civil engineer) briefed us about the site and safety precaution of site before entering the
site. Along the way, base plate, scaffolding and supporter of scaffolding can be seen. There are
also some scaffolding found besides the building to support the building and formwork of beam
which may not cause leakage of concrete and changes in shape. There are cube like concrete
blocks located under the reinforcement bars to acts as concrete cover or spacer. This would give
space for the reinforcement bars in contact with the concrete which would prevent the rusting of
reinforcement bars. There are some red wires found to protect the electrical cables. After that, we
saw various diameter of high tensile reinforcement bar on the ground near the bar bending
machine. There were a few workers bending the reinforcement bar from the machine. The
worker first measured the reinforcement bars and then bend easily using the bar bending
machine. Some of the workers were tying the links on the reinforcement bars on the ground floor
slab. Besides that, we saw lifter crane which ease the worker in carry things to higher floor. We
also saw the concrete mixer machine which is use to mix cement, fine aggregates, course
aggregates and water depends on their ratio. We saw formwork located besides the building and
to the sides of the soffit. Concrete bricks and clay bricks are used for brickwork for wall. Lastly,
some temporary works which are toilets are located in the construction site for better hygiene
purposes for workers.

5. PROJECT MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

The main contractor for this project is responsible to control the performance, the cost and the
schedule of the project. He has to ensure that all the goals and objectives of the project are to be
achieved with great results. This is done through precise planning, organizing, directing and
controlling. To achieve this outcome, a good organizational structure is to be practiced. For a
good organizational structure to perform various tasks precisely, a good team is required to
deliver this purpose. This is done via segregating the task of each works with good monitoring
system. In this project, a Project Manager is responsible towards monitoring the whole project as
a whole. The Project Manager is assisted by Project Engineers, Mechanical and Electrical
coordinators, Quantity Surveyor, Safety Officer and also other project team personnel. Each of
the team members will report to the Project Manager and contribute for the completion of the
project. Currently, from the physical progress of the project, it can be seen that the project is
ahead of schedule (60.13% - as per 1 Feb 2015). This shows that a good management practice is
being organized on the development of this project. However, it is hoped that the schedule will
always be on track / ahead schedule since there are several elements that can delay the project
such as weather condition, machinery break down, material delays etc. The current progress of
the projects also shows that good planning and coordination between each party that involves in
this project are being well organized.

6. PROJECT DOCUMENTATION:

For smooth and efficient function of construction site requires up to date documentation of
project documentation regarding Accounts planning, Finance allocation, project work break
down structure and materials flow in the site. These documents need to be revised from time to
time to maintain project in schedule. By suitable revision project may complete ahead to planned
date, which will benefit the client.

7. CONCLUSION

After visiting the site, I truly understand the situation of site visit including the scorching of sun
and the dust in the site. It is much tougher than what I thought compared to the life of studying in
the university. Sometimes in lecture class we only learn new knowledge without knowing how
the structure looks like. Apart from that, I also gained lots of knowledge about the basic of
construction process, way of using machinery equipment and can easily differentiate the types of
buildings materials used in the construction site. This would give me better understanding about
the modern design constructed. Lastly, I really think that this site visits benefits a lot on subject
and for my future which prepare me to overcome many upcoming problems throughout the
course. This would also provide more practical knowledge which would give me better
preparation for the future as a successful Project management consultant.
