Description
global organization of students and professionals using business to
improve the world.
The Alchemist, by Paulo Coelho, tells the story of a young shepherd
named Santiago who is able to find a treasure beyond his wildest dreams.
Along the way, he learns to listen to his heart and, more importantly,
realizes that his dreams, or his Personal Legend, are not just his but part of
the Soul of the Universe.
Holden Caulfield shares his experiences when expelled from prep school.
This book by J.D. Salinger is great for teenagers who can relate to it and
understand the narration.
In the book by Charles Dickens, Pip is dramatically risen from the lower
class to a life of leisure, while encountering confusing love along the way.
Follow Pip as he learns to accept his station in life.
Learn about passivity vs. passion in this book about Charlie, a high
schooler on the fringes of life. This book by Stephen Chbosky takes an
intimate look at what its like to grow up in high school.
Just as no list of coming-of-age novels could leave off The Catcher In The
Rye, none would be complete without the novel that, for all intents and
purposes, invented the bildungsroman: David Copperfield. But make no
mistake, this isn't on the list solely out of obligation. David Copperfield is a
stunning novel that rivals Charles Dickens' best work.
Mitch Albom's 1997 book Tuesdays with Morrie: An Old Man, a Young Man,
and Life's Greatest Lesson, is an inspirational
autobiographical/biographical work in which the author recounts his weekly
visits with his former professor and mentor, Morrie Schwartz. Professor
Schwartz was the type of inspirational professor that we see in movies like
Dead Poet's Society and Dangerous Minds. He encouraged his students to
follow their hearts and dreams wherever they took them. He stressed
having a positive attitude and looking at life as an ongoing adventure.

Voted as one of the most inspiring books, this title by Harper Lee touches

Inspirational people have the power to inspire us, motivate us and even
help us live our lives more fully.

Based on a true story, this inspiring American Playhouse production stars

Edward James Olmos as a high school teacher who motivated a class full
of East L.A. barrio kids to care enough about mathematics to pass an
Advanced Placement Calculus Test. Not exactly a variation of To Sir, With
Love, the film concerns itself with assumptions and biases held by
mainstream authorities about disadvantaged kids, and Olmos's efforts to
keep his students coolheaded enough to prove them wrong. Olmos,
virtually unrecognizable as the pudgy, balding instructor, gives a career
performance in this fine piece directed by Ramn Menndez, and written
by the director and Tom Musca. --Tom Keogh
Glenn Holland (Dreyfuss) is a passionate musician who dreams of
composing one truly memorable piece of music. But reality intrudes when
he reluctantly accepts a "day job" as a high school music teacher to
support his family. In time, however, Mr. Holland realizes that his real
passion is teaching, and his legacy is the generations of young people he
inspires.
Starring in what is quite possibly the most moving double performance ever
recorded on film (Time), Anne Bancroft and Patty Duke are remarkable in
their portrayals of Annie and Helen. Ennobling and uplifting (Variety), this
inspirational story of courageand hope is one of the finest works of art in
the history of motion pictures (Boxoffice). Locked in a frightening, lonely
world of silence and darkness since infancy, 7-year-old Helen Keller has
never seen the sky, heard her mother's voice or expressed her innermost
feelings. ThenAnnie Sullivan, a 20-year-old teacher from Boston, arrives.
Having just recently regained her own sight, the no-nonsense Annie
reaches out to Helen through the power of touchthe only tool they have in
commonand leads her bold pupil on a miraculous journey from fear and
isolation to happiness and light. *1962:

They were five students with nothing in common, faced with spending a
Saturday detention together in their high school library. At 7 a.m., they had
nothing to say, but by 4 p.m., they had bared their souls to each other and
become good friends. To the outside world they were simply the Jock, the
Brain, the Criminal, the Princess and the Kook, but to each other, they
would always be the Breakfast Club.
Way before Mr. Holland began teaching his opus and Michelle Pfeiffer was
molding dangerous minds, Sidney Poitier was taming a room of unruly
British teens with his real-life lessons and tough-love tactics (a boxing
glove to the stomach, anyone?). Having himself played an insubordinate
kid in 1955's Blackboard Jungle, the student masterfully becomes the
teacher in this sappy but never maudlin tale of inspiration and tolerance.

A young teacher inspires her class of at-risk students to learn tolerance,

apply themselves, and pursue education beyond high school.

An improvisational take on the high school experience, told from the

educators' point-of-view.
Filmmaker Davis Guggenheim reminds us that education "statistics" have
names: Anthony, Francisco, Bianca, Daisy, and Emily, whose stories make
up the engrossing foundation of WAITING FOR SUPERMAN. As he follows
a handful of promising kids through a system that inhibits, rather than
encourages, academic growth, Guggenheim undertakes an exhaustive
review of public education, surveying "drop-out factories" and "academic
sinkholes," methodically dissecting the system and its seemingly
intractable problems.
A movie with Antonio Banderas playing a ballroom dance instructor who
volunteers to monitor detention hall at an inner New York City high school,
and ends up changing the life of the kids, their self esteem, and their
outlook on life after taking on the challenge of teaching them ballroom
dancing
Kevin Kline plays a classics teacher at a prep school who 25 years after
teaching his first group of well off New Englanders has an opportunity to
see how profoundly he has affected the lives of the majority of his students.
He learns, then, that he has had an impact even though he failed to
change the one student he had wanted to turn around early on.
Young Trevor McKinney, troubled by his mother's alcoholism and fears of
his abusive but absent father, is caught up by an intriguing assignment
from his new social studies teacher, Mr. Simonet. The assignment: think of
something to change the world and put it into action. Trevor conjures the
notion of paying a favor not back, but forward--repaying good deeds not
with payback, but with new good deeds done to three new people. Trevor's
efforts to make good on his idea bring a revolution not only in the lives of
himself, his mother and his physically and emotionally scarred teacher, but
in those of an ever-widening circle of people completely unknown to him.

The success of our work is measured by a single question: Are people
better off now than when we started?
-PresidentWilliamJ. Clinton

Don't worry about what you need. Don't worry about what you want.
In this moment, be free to be you. Give the value that you long to give.
Do the things that can make a difference. Do them out of love.
You don't have a job; you have a purpose. The way to achieve is to stop
fretting about achievement.
Start loving the opportunity the moment holds. Success is not something
you strive for and get, but comes from how authentic you allow yourself to
be.
The beauty of now fills your world with possibility. Feel the love in your
heart, and you know what to do.
-- Ralph Marston

You must be the change you wish to see in the world. --Mahatma Gandhi

Smile at life
No matter what else you have or do not have, you have the beautiful
experience of life. No matter what may have happened before, or what
might come next, you have this moment.

Now is when you can make it count. Now is when you are connected with
unbounded opportunities to make a positive difference.

Don't waste your time complaining about what you lack or worrying about
what you might lose. Invest the best of what you have in this moment to
create new value.

If you choose to be annoyed or resentful, you'll only drag yourself down.

Instead, challenge yourself to be more positive and effective than you've
ever been, right now.

Smile at life, even when life has not smiled at you first. Be the first one to
initiate goodness, and you'll be the first one to benefit from that goodness.

You are here, and there is nothing to fear. Count your blessings, and
before you're finished counting you'll have even more.

-- Ralph Marston

My book, THE HAPPINESS PROJECT, is a memoir of the year I spent

test-driving the wisdom of the ages, the current scientific studies, and the
lessons from popular culture about how to be happy--from Aristotle to
Martin Seligman to Thoreau to Oprah. THE HAPPINESS PROJECT hit the
shelves in December 2009 (Harper) and, happily, was a #1 New York
Times bestseller. As one of the hundreds of happiness experiments I
conducted during the research and writing of the book, I started this blog.
Here, I recount my daily adventures in pursuit of happiness.

Beyond this, Hope Sings will reach even more people through a

writing and recording the songs in collaboration with other musicians.
Hope Sings will eventually include live concerts, and then a theatrical

Most college students learn very quickly the value of their time when
theyre struggling to balance work, school and a social life. With so much to
do it can be easy to become overwhelmed, stressed and eventually burnt
out. Students can help themselves stay sane and still get everything done
by developing good time management skills early on. These skills will not
only be valuable during their time at school but can carry over later into the
workplace. Here are some great ways for students to make the most of
their time, stay productive and still have fun.

A video of a lecture about time management skills

In this latest in the One Minute Manager series, the authors chastise
executives who never have time for family or their own job enhancement
because they accept too many responsibilities--"monkeys" clinging to their
backs--that properly belong to their staffs. Based on seminars conducted
by the late Oncken, the book explains in simple-minded if abstract terms
how to achieve a balance between supervision and delegation for reduced
tension and improved productivity. "There is a high correlation between
self-reliance and morale," stress the authors. With humor and logic they
describe the delicate business of assigning monkeys to the right masters
and keeping them healthy, i.e., fed and cared for: " . . . if monkeys are
managed properly, you don't have to manage people so much."
Unequivocal assignments, proper coaching and interim check-ups,
according to this program, can lead to effective delegation and, with it, a
better life at home and office. BOMC selection.
The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People: Powerful Lessons in Personal
Change was a groundbreaker when it was first published in 1990, and it
continues to be a business bestseller with more than 10 million copies sold.
Stephen Covey, an internationally respected leadership authority, realizes
that true success encompasses a balance of personal and professional
effectiveness, so this book is a manual for performing better in both
arenas. His anecdotes are as frequently from family situations as from
business challenges.
We think This is one of the best time management books because you can
use as much or as little as you like AND all of the ideas and tips can help
you save time. The book is well organized into sections and it starts with a
great short chapter title "I don't have time to read this book!" The best idea
we got from this book was about how our personal style impacts on our
time. The key concepts covered are:
Your Relationship with Time, Do the right things, Take Command and Other
People and Your Time.
This book and system has massive following. The subtle effectiveness of
GTD lies in its common sense notion that a complete and current inventory
of all your commitments , organized and reviewed in a systematic way
allows you focus on what needs to be done at any given time. The step-by-
step method includes, Capturing anything and everything that has your
attention: Defining actionable things into outcomes and concrete next
steps; Organizing reminders and information in categories; Keeping current
with frequent reviews of the six horizons (purpose, vision, goals, areas of
focus, projects, and actions)
Time Power covers topics such as Mastering Time through Goals,
Establishing proper priorities, overcoming the six biggest time wasters and
overcoming procrastination. You will have heard these ideas before, and
Time Power puts them together like an instruction manual. It's easy to find
what you want and easy to refer back. The approach is based on having a
lot of self-discipline (all people who spend time well have self-discipline, but
Tracy places very high importance on this ability).
Execution is "the missing link between aspirations and results," and as
such, making it happen is the business leader's most important job. While
failure in today's business environment is often attributed to other causes,
Bossidy and Charan argue that the biggest obstacle to success is the
absence of execution. They point out that without execution, breakthrough
thinking on managing change breaks down, and they emphasize the fact
that execution is a discipline to learn, not merely the tactical side of
business. Supporting this with stories of the "execution difference" being
won (EDS) and lost (Xerox and Lucent), the authors describe the building
blocks--leaders with the right behaviors, a culture that rewards execution,
and a reliable system for having the right people in the right jobs--that need
to be in place to manage the three core business processes of people,
strategy, and operations. Both Bossidy, CEO of Honeywell International,
Inc., and Charan, advisor to corporate executives and author of such books
as What the CEO Wants You to Know and Boards That Work, present
experience-tested insight into how the smooth linking of these three
processes can differentiate one company from the rest. Developing the
discipline of execution isn't made out to be simple, nor is this book a quick,
easy read. Bossidy and Charan do, however, offer good advice on a
neglected topic, making Execution a smart business leader's guide to
enacting success rather than permitting demise. --S. Ketchum
This book is a great practical hands-on book for improving your time-
management. It starts by checking on you motivation for wanting to do
stuff. The two great ideas we like in this book are the WADE formula and
the concept of time mapping. We use both of these as part of our coaching
toolkit. W = write it down. A = add it up (how long will it take). D = decide (to
do or no to do). E = execute.
The legendary Eat That Frog! by Brian Tracy (more than 450,000 copies

methods for conquering procrastination and accomplishing more. This new
edition is revised and updated throughout, and includes brand new
information on how to keep technology from dominating our time.

TED is a small nonprofit devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. It started out
(in 1984) as a conference bringing together people from three worlds:
Technology, Entertainment, Design. Since then its scope has become ever
broader. Along with two annual conferences -- the TED Conference in Long
Beach and Palm Springs each spring, and the TEDGlobal conference in
Oxford UK each summer -- TED includes the award-winning TEDTalks
video site, the Open Translation Project and Open TV Project, the inspiring
TED Fellows and TEDx programs, and the annual TED Prize.
"Prison Dharma Network (PDN), is an international, nonsectarian,
contemplative support network for prisoners, prison volunteers, and
corrections professionals. PDN's mission is to provide prisoners, and those
who work with them, with the most effective contemplative tools for self-
transformation and rehabilitation. We support prisoners in the practice of
contemplative disciplines, with an emphasis on sitting meditation practice
and the practice and study of Buddhist teachings and other wisdom
traditions. We promote these paths of wakefulness and non-aggression as
ideal vehicles for self-rehabilitation and personal transformation. We
believe in the power of the various mindfulness-awareness practices and
body-mind disciplines of the worlds contemplative traditions to change
behaviors, transform lives, and ultimately to reduce recidivism, prevent
crime, and enhance community safety and well-being.

The water and sanitation problem in the developing world is far too big for
charity alone. We are driving the water sector for new solutions, new
financing models, greater transparency, and real partnerships to create
lasting change. Our vision: the day when everyone in the world can take a
safe drink of water.

Co-founded by Matt Damon and Gary White, Water.org is a nonprofit

organization that has transformed hundreds of communities in Africa,
South Asia, and Central America by providing access to safe water and
sanitation. Water.org traces its roots back to the founding of WaterPartners
in 1990. In July 2009, WaterPartners merged with H2O Africa, resulting in
the launch of Water.org. Water.org works with local partners to deliver
innovative solutions for long-term success. Its microfinance-based
WaterCredit Initiative is pioneering sustainable giving in the sector.
Positive Psychology is the scientific study of the strengths and virtues that
enable individuals and communities to thrive. The Positive Psychology
Center promotes research, training, education, and the dissemination of
Positive Psychology. This field is founded on the belief that people want to
lead meaningful and fulfilling lives, to cultivate what is best within
themselves, and to enhance their experiences of love, work, and play.
Positive Psychology has three central concerns: positive emotions, positive
individual traits, and positive institutions. Understanding positive emotions
entails the study of contentment with the past, happiness in the present,
and hope for the future. Understanding positive individual traits consists of
the study of the strengths and virtues, such as the capacity for love and
work, courage, compassion, resilience, creativity, curiosity, integrity, self-
knowledge, moderation, self-control, and wisdom. Understanding positive
institutions entails the study of the strengths that foster better communities,
such as justice, responsibility, civility, parenting, nurturance, work ethic,
leadership, teamwork, purpose, and tolerance

Career Gears story began in 1999 when Gary Field, a former director of

need was something as straightforward as providing a business suit.
Today providing suits for a job interview is just the first step. We now
