CE 2070 ENGINEERING COST ESTIMATION

Time allowed: 3 Hours June 2009

INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES:

This examination accounts for 70 % of the module assessment. The total maximum
mark attainable is 100. The marks assigned for each question & sections there of are
indicated in square brackets.

This is a closed book examination.

Answer ALL questions.

Assume reasonable values for any data not given in or with the examination paper.
Clearly state such assumptions made on the script.

If you have any doubt as to the interpretation of the wording of a question, make your
own decision, but clearly state it on the script.

Question 1

(a) Briefly explain what is a Tender document and its content.


(6 Marks)
(b) Discuss the importance of a Bill of Quantities (BOQ) in construction
contracts.
(8Marks)
(c) You are working for a Consultancy firm, which has got a house plan as in
Figure Q 1 from one of its clients for the preparation of an estimate. As a
member of the estimating group, you have been asked to calculate
quantities for the substructure of the house in accordance with the
specifications given. You are required to do the followings:
a. Prepare the take off list for the substructure; (4 Marks)
b. Calculate the centre line dimensions; and (7 Marks)
c. Take off quantities ofthe following items
i. Topsoil removal. (3 marks)
ii. Excavating trenches. (6 marks)
iii. Earth work support. (5 marks)
IV. Rubble foundation. (7 marks)
v. Filling around foundation. (4 marks)

All measurements to be taken in accordance with the SLS573: 1999.

Specification notes

Topsoil to be removed to a depth of lOOmm by extracting 1m extra length from


building lines all sides

All excavations to be backfilled with suitable excavated materials

Rubble work to be in cement sand 1:3 mortar

(a) Discuss the facilities that should be provided In a computer- aided
estimating system. (4 marks)

(b) Explain the tasks to be carried out in direct cost estimating. (4 marks)

(c) Calculate the rates of the following items.


1. Rubble masonry in 1:6 cement:sand mortar. (5 marks)
ii. 1:3:6 (cement:sand:metal) 75 mm thick concrete floor. (5 marks)

(d) What are the factors that should be included in a tender evaluation report?

(e) List 10 important factors that a contractor should consider in making the
decision to tender for a project. (6 Marks)

(f) Calculate the quantities of the following items of the house shown in
Figure Q1. Assume wall height of 3m and a concrete flat roof. Provide

doors and windows of your choice.


i. Block walls.

ii. Concrete floor and floor rendering
