Synopsis:
Tama is the result of a unique collaboration between Deaf and hearing filmmakers.
Tama is about a young indigenous Deaf boy who tries to perform the traditional Mori
war dance, the Haka, silently. He is isolated within his family where communication is
challenging. On a near-fatal car trip, Tama has to confront his father and in his struggle,
he begins to grow from an undervalued youth into a proud young man.
Directors Statement:
We used strong reverberation in the soundmix so that Deaf and hearing audiences can
feel, rather than hear, the sound when Tama performs his silent Haka. The collaboration
between a Deaf and hearing director is unique and we both brought our own strengths to
the film. Jareds strong sense of visual story telling and direction of our Deaf actor gave
this film a unique voice. Jacks ability to direct hearing actors and create a strong sound-
scape helped our combined vision come to life.
Jared Flitcroft
Director
Jared Flitcroft is a Deaf indigenous film maker from Wellington, New Zealand. He
graduated from Victoria University with a Bachelor of Media Studies. He was also the
first Deaf person to graduate from the New Zealand Film and Television School.

Jared is the chairperson of New Zealand Deaf Film Inc. where he leads a team through
workshops and collaborations with film industry professionals. He also chairs the

collaboration with a hearing director.
