This experiment investigates the density of water and oil by creating "blobs" using a clear plastic bottle filled with water, vegetable oil, food coloring, and Alka-Seltzer tablets. Drops of food coloring are added to the oil layer and sink into the water below, and half a tablet of Alka-Seltzer is dropped in to react with the water and cause the colored water to rise up in "blobby" formations for observation.

2. Learning Objectives: To investigate the density of water and oil. 3. Materials: a) Alka-Seltzer or generic effervescent-antacid-and-pain-relieving tablet b) Vegetable oil c) Water d) Tall clear plastic container e) Food colouring (neon colours work well) 4. Procedure a) Pour water about 1/3 of bottle. b) Use a measuring cup or funnel to slowly pour the vegetable oil into the bottle until its almost full. [You may have to wait a few minutes for the oil and water separate but do not fill it to the brim] c) Add 5 drops of food colouring to the bottle (Red, blue, green) d) The drops will pass through the oil and then mix with the water below. e) Break a seltzer tablet in half and drop the half tablet into the bottle. f) Watch it sink to the bottom and let the blobby greatness begin! g) To keep the effect going, just add another tablet piece. For a true lava lamp effect, shine a flashlight through the bottom of the bottle.
