1. GENERAL
1.1 This Standard Specification defines the Nominal Voltages, Frequency and
Phase Rotation, which are used in the Power Plant for the Instrument and
Control Units (as Controllers, Control Stations, Industrial Computers, etc.)
2.1 Three phase 230/400V 10% in accordance with IEC 60038 Standard.
2.2 Single phase 230V 10% in accordance with IEC 60038 Standard, except solenoid
valves.
2.3 Single phase 240V 10% for Solenoid Valve coils (Non-standard voltage. See
ATTACHMENT).
2.6 The control voltage shall preferably be 230V, 50 Hz, single phase.
2.7 All AC voltages different from the above shall be approved by Israel Electric
Corporation.
3.1 Direct current nominal voltage shall preferably be 220V +10% -15% ungrounded.
Direct current nominal voltage 125V +10% -15% is also acceptable for Gas Turbine
Power Stations.
3.2 Direct current nominal voltage for instrument, connected to the PCMS (Plant Control
and Monitoring System) or to the PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) shall be
consistent with the Project Specification (24V 10%, or 48V 10%, etc.).
3.3 Solenoid valve coils nominal voltage shall be 220V 10%, or 24V 10%, consistent
with the Project Specification.

1. The Solenoid Valves are widely used in many applications in the Power Stations. By
applying electric current to a solenoid, a magnetic field is generated to pull or pulse a
valve plunger. It's important to know that the permeability of a magnetic material is
much greater than that of air. This means that the current that is needed to pull or
pulse the plunger is much greater than what is needed to hold the plunger. This is
the reason why one finds two specifications on a valve, the inrush current and hold
current. It's also well-known that when a solenoid is being energized, heat is
generated on the coil. Higher current (higher voltage) applied to the solenoid
generates more heat. Long time energizing a solenoid can cause the coil to overheat
and operate at unsafe temperatures and even fail to operate properly.
2. Solenoid Valve manufacturers often state that applying higher voltages for a long
time cause the coil to overheat.
"ASCO" for instance, states for its Solenoid Valves:
"All ASCO valves are tested and designed to operate at 15% under the nominal
voltage and are capable to operating for short periods at 10% over the nominal
voltage" (Leaflet V1105-2)
"This period of time may differ, depending on solenoid construction, voltage
variation, ambient temperature, valve size and piping system, from 1 to 5 hours of
operation." (Leaflet V1105-9).
3. One way of ensuring a reliable longtime operation of the AC Solenoid Valves under
energized condition is to have their nominal voltage to be higher than the actual
10%
standard nominal voltage ( 240V +15 % for the AC Solenoid Valves powered from
230V 10% power sources). This is the method adopted for IEC's Power Stations.
