1. Show that the chemical potential of a two-dimensional free Fermi gas

at temperature T is given by
( )
= kB T ln exp(nh2 /mkB T ) 1 ,

where m is the mass of the Fermion, and n is the number of Fermions

per unit area.

2. The He3 atoms have spin 1/2. The density of liquid He3 near T = 0
is 0.081 gm cm3 . Find its Fermi energy and Fermi temperature.
(Take the mass of an atom of He3 to be approximately 5 1024 gm,
Avogadros number 6 1023 per mole).

3. The energy of an electron in the relativistic limit ( >> me c2 where

me is the rest mass of an electron) is related with momentum p by
the relation = pc. (a) Show that the Fermi energy in this limit
is F hc(N/V )1/3 . (b) If U denotes the energy then show that
U = 3N F /4.

4. Find Fermi energy of one-dimensional gas of N Fermions confined in

the region 0 x L at T = 0 assuming periodic boundary condition.

5. Find the chemical potential of one dimensional Fermi gas at temper-

ature T to order (T /TF )2 where TF is the Fermi temperature. Show
that is an increasing function of T . Recall that is a decreasing
function of T if the gas is three-dimensional.
