I have so much to tell you, I dont know where to begin! Remember last

C o m m u n i t y S a f e t y, " w o n ! T h e p r i z e w a s a w e e k e n d t r i p t o N e w Yo r k
C i t y, w i t h a v i s i t t o t h e Te e n S a y o ff i c e s t o s e e h o w t h e y p u b l i s h t h e

But when we got to the airport and met the other people in our group, I
r e l a x e d . T h e g r o u p l e a d e r, M s. A l v a r e z , w a s r e a l l y f r i e n d l y a n d e a s y t o
t a l k t o. S h e i s i n c h a r g e o f m a r k e t i n g a n d s p e c i a l p r o m o t i o n s a t
Te e n S a y M a g a z i n e . W h i l e w e w a i t e d f o r o u r f l i g h t , s h e d e s c r i b e d t h e
activities wed be participating in that weekend. She also introduced

community spirit award for cleaning up and improving the
neighbourhood parks in his town. Irene and Eddie both seemed like a
l o t o f f u n . B e f o r e o u r p l a n e e v e n t o o k o ff , w e w e r e l a u g h i n g a n d t e l l i n g
j o k e s l i k e w e d k n o w n e a c h ot h e r f or e v e r.

I w a s s ur p r i s e d at h o w q u i c k t h e f l i g h t s e e m e d . S i n c e M s. A l v a r e z a n d I
w e r e s i t t i n g n e x t t o e a c h o t h e r, s h e t o l d m e a l o t a b o u t h e r s e l f a n d h o w
s h e h a d e n d e d u p w o r k i n g a t Te e n S a y M a g a z i n e . S h e s a i d t h a t a s a
y o u n g g i r l s h e h a d a l w a y s e n j o y e d w r i t i n g st o r i e s a n d i n t e r v i e w i n g
people. She also loved planning and organizing events. She was
a l w a y s i n c h a r g e o f p l a n n i n g h e r s c h o o l s d a n c e s a n d f u n d r a i s e r s , a n d
e v e n o r g a n i z e d h e r f a m i l y s b i g r e u n i o n p a r t y e v e r y y e a r. A f t e r c o l l e g e ,
s h e g o t a j o b a s a r e p o r t e r a t Te e n S a y, a n d t h e n s h e g r a d u a l l y m o v e d
i n t o t h e i r m ar k e t i n g a n d s p e c i a l p r o m o t i o n s d e p a r t m e n t . S h e s a i d t h a t
s h e s t i l l o c c a s i o n a l l y w r i t e s a n a r t i c l e f or t h e m , b u t s h e l o v e s w h a t s h e
d o e s n o w. I t o l d h e r t h at I w a s t h i n k i n g a b o u t b e c o m i n g a r e p o r t e r
s o m e d a y, a n d s h e s a i d t h at s h e t h o u g h t I c o u l d d o i t i f I w o r k e d r e a l l y
hard.

W h e n w e a r r i v e d a t t h e Te e n S a y off i c e s , M s . A l v a r e z t o o k u s o n a t o u r.
We g o t t o s e e h o w a m a g a z i n e g o e s f r om a r o u g h m a n u s c r i p t t o a
finished issue. I couldnt believe how much work and detail goes into
each issue, and how many people it takes to do the work. My favorite
part was seeing the bulletin board where sketches, rough drafts, and
o u t l i n e s g e t p i n n e d u p i n s e q u e n c e . We a l s o m e t m a n y o f t h e
e m p l o y e e s , f r om i l l u s t r a t o r s a n d w r i t e r s t o p h o t o g r a p h e r s a n d e d i t o r s ,
and they answered all of our questions.

B y t h e t im e t h e t o u r w a s o v e r, M s. A l v a r e z c o u l d t e l l t h at w e w e r e
getting tired. She took us to her favourite restaurant, and on the way
there we had a chance to do some window-shopping and check out
s o m e o f t h e s i g h t s . A l l a r o u n d u s , p e o p l e w e r e s p e a k i n g d i ff e r e nt
l a n g u a g e s . I t o l d M s. A l v a r e z t h a t I t h o u g h t I c o u l d s p e n d a w h o l e y e a r
i n N e w Yo r k a n d st i l l n o t s e e e v e r yt h i n g !
