Summary

Afterthemurder,Raskolnikovcollapsesintoadeepsleep.Uponawakening,heisterrifiedhehas
sleptforsolongthathefearsthatheisgoingmad.Herememberstheitemsthathehadstolenand
hisfailuretohidethemortolockthedoorofhisflatthiswasmadness.Ashehidestheitems,he
beginstowonderifhispunishmentisalreadybeginningandafterafewstirringsandattemptstohide
hislootinaholeinhisroom,hesurrenderedhimselftomingledsleepanddelirium.

AgainheawakenstoNastasya'spounding.TheporteriswithherandhehandsRaskolnikova
summonstoreporttothepolice.Nastasyadoesnotwanthimtomovesincehehashadafever
sincethedaybefore.Ashedresses,heisrepulsedbythethoughtofwearingthebloodysocks,but
sincehehasnoothers,heisforcedtodoso.Onthewaytothepolicestation,hethinksthathe
mightjustconfessitallandbedonewithit:"Ishallgoin,fallonmyknees,andtellthewholestory."

Analysis

Inanovelwithsixpartsandanepilogue,onecaneasilyarguethatthefirstpartisaprologue
becauseonlythatpartisdevotedtothecrimeandtheremainingpartsaredevotedtothe
punishmentthatbeginsimmediatelywithhishatredofthebloodonhisclothesandespeciallyonhis
socks,andthelossofhisabilitytoretaincompletecontroloverallofhisfaculties.

Crimethereforeisademanding,troublesomematterthatbecomesacolossalnuisance.Andcrimeis
accompaniedbyvarioustypesofillnesseswithRaskolnikov,itisexpressedinhistemperature,his
inabilitytofunctionnormally,andhisdreadoftheverybloodthathehasjustshed.Whenitis
necessarytoputonthebloodysocks,hisrepulsionindicateshisdreadoforlivingwithhismurder.
Thisscenecontrastswellwiththelaterscenewhenheissplatteredwithbloodfromthedeathof
Marmeladov.Inthislaterscene,hehadnoqualmsabouttouchingbloodperse.

Attheendofthechapter,Raskolnikov'sfaintingspellisaresultofthetensioncausedbythe
summonstheoppressivesmellofthenewpaint,whichremindshimofthemurderscenethe
crowdedconditionswithitslackoffreshairandfinallythediscussionofthemurderofAlyona
Ivanovna.ThisfaintingspellwilllaterbecomeacauseofsuspicionandwillbeusedbyPorfiry.
