1. World's highest bridge opens in China

The world's highest bridge has opened to traffic in China, connecting two
provinces in the mountainous southwest and reducing travel times by as much as
three-quarters.

The Beipanjiang Bridge soars 565 metres (1,854 feet) above a river and
connects the two mountainous provinces of Yunnan and Guizhou.

2. Supreme Court sacks Anurag Thakur, Ajay Shirke from BCCI

The Supreme Court has sacked BCCI president Anurag Thakur and secretary Ajay
Shirke and asked all others, who were disqualified to hold posts under new court
mandated norms, to step down.
The court also issued contempt notices to Thakur and Shirke.
A board of administrators will be named soon to take charge of the BCCI.
SC has appointed Fali Nariman and senior SC lawyer Gopal Subramanium
as Amicus Curiae to find out who would be the BCCI officials.

3. Mother Dairy unveils Aadhar-enabled payment

To promote cash less transactions, Mother Dairy Fruit & Vegetable Pvt. Ltd.
introduced Aadhar-Enabled Payment System (AEPS) in more than 1,000 milk
booths and Safal retail stores.

This service would now be available in addition to the existing modes like e-
wallets and SmartChange Cards.
The service was commissioned in association with CSC e-Governance
Service India Ltd. under the aegis of Department of Electronics and
Information Technology (Deity).

4. RBI allows NRIs to exchange defunct notes up to June 30

The Reserve Bank of India has allowed non-resident Indians to exchange scrapped
Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes till June 30.
This facility will be available through RBI offices in Mumbai, Delhi,
Chennai, Kolkata and Nagpur.
The banking regulator said that resident Indian citizens who failed to deposit
old notes and were abroad between November 9 and December 30, 2016 can
avail themselves of this facility up to March 31, 2017, and NRI citizens, who
were abroad during this period, can exchange their defunct notes up to June
30, 2017.

5. David R. Syiemlieh to perform duties of Chairman, UPSC

The President has appointed Prof. David R. Syiemlieh, Member, Union Public
Service Commission, to perform the duties of the post of Chairman, Union Public
Service Commission, with effect from the forenoon of January 4, 2017 until further
orders or until completion of his term as member on 21.01.2018, whichever is
earlier.

Prior to the fresh appointment, Syiemlieh was functioning as a UPSC


member from June 25, 2012, till date.

6. Archana Nigam is new Controller General of Accounts


The Centre has appointed Archana Nigam as the next Controller General of
Accounts in the Finance Ministry.

Prior to this appointment, Nigam was involved in the critical task of setting
up of the accounting framework for the GST regime to be launched by
Government in next financial year.
Nigam, who assumed charge as CGA on 2 January 2017, has been appointed
in the place of M.J.Joseph, who has superannuated on 31 December 2016.

7. Indian-Origin Appointed To Top Military Post In Kyrgyzstan

An Indian-origin Saudi-based entrepreneur has been appointed Major General of


Kyrgyzstan, a rare military position occupied by an Indian in the Central Asian
country.

Shaikh Rafik Mohammed, who hails from Kerala, was appointed Major
General of Kyrgyzstan by Ali Mirza, Defence Minister of Kyrgyzstan at an
official ceremony held in the country.
Mr Rafik holds Kyrgyzstan nationality conferred by its former President
Kurmanbek Saliyevich Bakiyev whom he casually met while working in
Iran.
8. British-Indian professor knighted in New Year's honours

Shankar Balasubramanian, an Indian-origin British professor of chemistry and


DNA expert at Cambridge University, has received a Knighthood by Queen
Elizabeth II.

Olympic stars Andy Murray and Mo Farah were among others awarded for
their contributions.
Balasubramanian, 50, Herchel Smith Professor of Medicinal Chemistry at
Cambridge University, has been recognised for his work as a co-inventor of
Next Generation DNA sequencing.

9. Somdev announces retirement from professional tennis


Ravaged by injuries, Indias star singles player Somdev Devvarman announced his
retirement from professional tennis, bringing an abrupt end to what was once a
promising career.

The 31-year-olds career was hampered by a recurring shoulder injury in


2012.
He was conferred the Arjuna award the countrys second highest sporting
honour in 2011.

10. Lionel Messi named the best playmaker of 2016 by IFFHS

Lionel Messi has won the Best Playmaker of 2016 award for his overall
contribution to club and country by the International Federation of Football,
History and Statistics.

IFFHS started this award in 2006 and it has been completely dominated by
La Liga players ever since.
Zinedine Zidane, the current Real Madrid manager was the first recipient of
this accolade back in 2006 followed by Kaka who won it the following year.
This award is decided by votes from 56 countries from five different
continents.

11. Pak's oldest living Test player Imtiaz Ahmed passes away
Pakistan cricket has lost its oldest living Test player Imtiaz Ahmed after he passed
away in Lahore following a protracted illness.

The death of Imtiaz leaves former batsman Waqar Hasan, who now lives in
London, as the lone survivor from the Pakistan team's first Test tour.
Imtiaz was a member of the Pakistan squad that went on a maiden Test tour
to India.
He went on to play in 41 Tests as wicketkeeper-batsman, scoring 2079 runs
that included 209 against New Zealand in 1955 at Goddard stadium in
Lahore.
