The course aims to treat advanced topics in constructional steelwork.

- Structural instability
- Buckling of columns
- Local buckling of plates (Includes Plate Girders)
- Torsional and warping effects
- Lateral-torsional buckling and beam behaviour
- Basics of connection design
- Design for fatigue
- Crane supporting structures
- Concepts of structural risk assessment

About the Presenter


Dr Alvin Masarira: PrEng, is a Structural Engineering Consultant with Isithelo Technical Solutions (PTY)
LTD which provides expert services to the mining, manufacturing and other related industries. He is
also proprietor of Structural SIMTech Consulting (PTY) LTD. Prior to that he was a Senior Structural
Engineer at Anglo American plc, providing civil/structural engineering support, conducting technical
reviews on designs as well as structural failure investigations. He also developed solutions for remedial
action as well as performing regular structural and civil engineering condition assessments. He serves
as a Visiting Lecturer at the University of Cape Town and the University of Johannesburg, teaching both
undergraduate and postgraduate civil/structural engineering courses.

Who should attend?


The course is intended for engineers and technical staff involved in the design, construction and
management of steel structures. The course will also serve experienced staff needing to refresh on
specific areas addressed in the course.

Format
The course is presented over five days of formal lectures.

Cost
The fee for the course will be R10800. Discounts for staff and students of UCT, and students of other
tertiary education institutes are available under certain circumstances. Payment details are on the
application form.

Certificates and CPD Points


A certificate of attendance will be awarded to CPD participants. Participants need to attend 80% of the
lectures to qualify for an attendance certificate.
CPD participants can also request a formal university transcript, which will show this course as part of
a Professional Development Career.
Please note: If you are interested in attending this course for credit purposes, you will need to register
for the Masters Programme or as an occasional student. If you attend the course as a CPD participant,
credit cannot be claimed in retrospect.
The course is also registered with the Engineering Council of South Africa, and is accredited for the
award of CPD points, which are required for continuing professional registration. The ECSA course
code is UCTSDSS17.

In order to ensure a place on the course applicants should complete and send a signed registration
form to the course administrators: Heidi Tait or Sandra Jemaar
Confirmation will be sent on receipt of an application form
Applications close on 1st September 2017.
Fees are due on 1 September 2017. Registration can only be confirmed after receipt of the course
fees.
Please note that there is limited space on this course.
Cancellations must be received before the Applications close date of the course, or the full fee
will be charged.
