Bennetts short stint with Green Bay ends

The Green Bay Packers have
waived Martellus Bennett, bring-
ing the tight ends short tenure
at Lambeau Field to a surprising
end.
General manager Ted Thomp-
son announced the move on
Wednesday after practice.
The Packers cited a failure to
disclose a physical condition for
making the move. Bennett prac-
ticed on Tuesday after the bye last
week before going on the injury
report with a shoulder injury.
He did not play in the 30-17 loss
on Monday to the Detroit Lions af-
ter being listed as doubtful for the
game.
Bennett also posted on Insta-
gram during the bye week a mes-
sage that indicated he was think-
ing about retirement.

In free agency, Bennett got
a three-year, $21 million con-
tract that included a $6.3 mil-
lion signing bonus. Bennett
had base salaries of $900,000
this season, $3.6 million (plus
a $2 million roster bonus) in
2018 and $5.65 million in 2019.
The Packers could go after the
bonus, $4.2 million.
With a Chicago-based fam-
ily and a passion for art and
creativity, the 30-year-old Ben-
nett was asked during training
camp if he had considered retir-
ing after winning a Super Bowl
with New England last season.

on Friday and having to perform on
Monday? Its not much time to get ready.
A I dont think you can really get
ready. Thats why you stay ready.
Thats why when youre back home you
keep training. Nobodys sitting there
like, Im ready for when somebody
randomly calls me. You know what I
mean? You stay ready. You do what
you can and then you get here and just
dont think too hard. Thats how my
mindsets been.
Q What were you doing?
A I was training, working out and work-
ing part-time at two places. I was
training some younger kids on agilities and
weightlifting and stuff like that. And then
I was helping out on a potato farm. I was
in the kitchen making French fries. Youve
got to do what youve got to do, man.

CHICAGO As the Chicago Bears
prepare to take on the Green Bay Pack-
ers to kickoff the second half of the
2017 season, there is one more report
card to complete general manager
Ryan Paces.
General managers cant be expected
to bat .1000 on personnel moves and
coaching decisions any more than
pitchers can be expected to have 0.00
earned run averages.
If 2.50 is a great ERA, and it is, than a
GM that bats .500 is outstanding.
So lets actually break this down.
Paces 2015 free agent class includ-
ed Pernell McPhee, Eddie Royal, An-
trel Rolle, Tracy Porter, Jarvis Jen-
kins, Sam Acho, Alan Ball, Vladimir
Ducasse, Mason Foster, Thomas Gaf-
ford, Ray McDonald, Dante Rosario
and Jacquizz Rodgers.
McDonald and Rolle were big busts,
while McPhee, Porter and Acho be-
came important contributors, and
Royal, Ball, Jenkins, Ducasse and
Rodgers played meaningful minutes
before moving on.
Thats a .615 batting average for par-
ticipation, .231 for quality adds and
.154 for bust factor.
Grading the group, you have to take
Paces opening moves at
cleaning up the mess left
by Phil Emery and Marc
Trestman, so there was
a quantity over quality
aspect.
I think its fair to call it
a B- or C+.
2016 free agency
brought Danny Trev-
athan, Jerrell Freeman,
Bobby Massie, Akiem
Hicks, Aaron Brewer,
HUB ARKUSH
Manny Ramirez, Ted @Hub_Arkush
Larsen, Omar Bolden
and Josh Sitton.
Hicks, Sitton, Trevathan and Massie
are looking like excellent additions,
only Freeman is looking bad right now
and all but Brewer, Ramirez and Bold-
en brought something.
Thats .667 for participation, .444 for its not fair to grade this group but it
quality adds and just a .111 bust fac-
tor assuming thats where Freeman
ends up.
With the outstanding play of Hicks,
Trevathan and Sitton, its fair to call
this group an A- or B+.
So far this year, free agency has
yielded Mike Glennon, Mark Sanchez,
Prince Amukamara, Marcus Cooper,
Quintin Demps, B.W. Webb, Benny
Cunningham, Kendall Wright, Markus
Wheaton, Dion Sims, Tom Compton,
Brad Sowell and John
Jenkins.
Only Jenkins and
Webb are gone, I think
you have to call Glen-
non more a big disap-
pointment than a bust,
I was unimpressed with
Demps and Wheaton has
to be an incomplete.
Thats a .615 for par-
ticipation not including
Sanchez, whose con-
tributions are hard to
measure; Amukamara,
Cooper, Cunningham,
Wright, Sims and Comp-
ton are making a difference for a .462
add percentage, and Glennon and
Demps are pointing toward busts so
the bust factor is a .154.
With just half a season in the books,
has the feel of a B- or C + right now.
Normally wed have a grade on the
2015 draft by now, but with the injuries
to Kevin White and Hroniss Grasu its
impossible.
Scream all you want but Pace bares
no blame for White breaking three
different bones, and Eddie Goldman
is playing at a very high level, while
Adrian Amos is a much-improved
starter as well.
Eight of nine 16 picks are still here,
Jordan Howard and Leonard Floyd are
looking special and Cody Whitehair
was an All Rookie pick, too, and Jona-
than Bullard, Nick Kwiatkoski and De-
iondre Hall have shown real promise.
It has the makings of an outstanding
class.
Yes, I hated the Trubisky trade
but all we know as far as long-range
predictions about this years group is
the excitement every time Mitch Tru-
bisky, Tarik Cohen and Eddie Jackson
are around the ball.
I dont see how Pace gets less than a
B for his drafts and that grade could
still go up.
One other note: the identification of
undrafted rookie free agents Bryce
Callahan, Jonathan Anderson, Cam
Meredith, John Timu, Roy Robert-
son-Harris, Ben Braunecker, Tanner
Gentry and Isaiah Irving has been
outstanding.
As far as coaching choices, clearly
there are better game managers than
John Fox, but lets see where all this
young talent is at the end of this season.
Unfortunately, there is no way to
grade or judge a general manager
without some level of subjectivity, but
with a whole bunch of objective mea-
surement here as well, I dont see how
Pace gets less than a B, and its hard
to avoid the feeling his arrow may be
pointing up.

The Green Bay Packers had
just been soundly defeated by
the Detroit Lions on Monday
night. Nothing had gone right
for the Packers.
For the third consecutive
game with Brett Hundley at
quarterback, the Packers failed
to break 17 points. And even
this meager total was mis-
leading. Green Bay had three
points through three quarters
before Hundley led a couple of
touchdown drives, which sent
his passing total from 97 yards
to 245.
Hundley called it a step in
the right direction.
On Wednesday, having re-
viewed that game and started
getting ready for Sundays
game at the Chicago Bears,
Hundley again saw building
blocks.
We got the ball out, we were
moving it. Weve just got to put
points on the board, he said.
We got stalled a couple times on
a couple three-and-outs. Once
we get in a rhythm and once we
get going, we were moving the
ball efficiently. We just have to
take that and make it points ev-
ery time we do that. Thats the
big come-along with that.
The Packers have averaged
14.7 points during their losing
streak. During the first five
games with Aaron Rodgers at
quarterback, they averaged
27.4.
Its not all about Hundley, re-
ceiver Randall Cobb said.
We always talk about it in
the receiver room. The team
goes through us, Cobb said.
When were able to make
those big plays, I think it pro-
vides a spark for this team. Not
only offensively but throughout
the entire team. I put that on
my shoulders. I talk about it all
the time. I have to break more
tackles. I dont believe Ive
been the player I need to be for
this team. Once I break tackles,

(Adams) break tackles, that
energy I think will build and I
think itll continue throughout

give to this team. If I do more
than me, then Im getting out
of my comfort zone and things
probably wont go right.
SITTON GETS ANOTHER
SHOT AT PACKERS
Josh Sitton was coming off a
Pro Bowl season for the Pack-

ing camp in 2016, he shockingly

ally upset about any player that
gets injured. It was no differ-
ent with Davante. I dont think
any of these guys try to go after
people intentionally.
HUNDLEYS HABIT
One interesting sidenote to
Hundleys time at quarterback
is his unusual habit of chewing
gum on the field.
Hundley said its a replace-
ment for the mouthpiece he
wore at UCLA.
It has gotten worse and
worse over these past couple
of years, Hundley said on
Wednesday. I actually start-
ed because I used to wear a
mouthpiece and they dont
wear mouthpieces here, I
guess, so I didnt wear a mouth-
piece. I threw in some gum and
it stuck.
