Unit Title: Getting to Know Yourself Name: Shane Horan

Content Area: Physical Education Grade Level: 6th
CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s):

C. S. S. 3.6 Monitor the intensity of one's heart rate during physical activity.
C. S. S. 4.1 Distinguish between effective and ineffective warm-up and cool-down techniques.
C. S. S. 4.2 Develop a one-day personal physical fitness plan specifying the intensity, time, and types of physical activities for each component of health-related
physical fitness.
C. S. S. 4.5 Explain methods of monitoring heart rate intensity

Big Ideas/Unit Goals:

How well do students understand their physical activity capability?
Can students distinguish between effective and noneffective warm ups and cool down?
Are students able to find their pulse, and count it accurately?
Do students understand the basic anatomy of a heart and its function?
Unit Summary:
In this lesson, students will have the opportunity to familiarize themselves with their body and their capabilities. In the first lesson, students will understand
basic knowledge about the heart, and learn to take their own pulse. The second part of the lesson, students will explore different warm up and cool down
exercises and learn helpful techniques to maximize each activity. Lastly, putting it all together, students will create a fitness plan that is unique to their specific
capability by monitoring their heart rate during physical activity. By doing all these lessons, they will understand how to find a pulse, be able to understand
concepts of warming up and cooling down and be able to create a fitness plan that is best for them.

Venn Diagram- Students will create a Venn diagram
comparing cooling down and warming up. On one
side, students will list everything that they know
about warming up, and the other side for cooling
down. Then, in the middle they will list the
similarities, such as the benefits for the body.
Journal- Students will journal how they feel about
the exercise plan. They can journal if they feel
confident, confused, and if they need help with
ideas.
