STATISTICAL PROJECT.

DETERMINING THE LENGTH OF IZPISUAS INCH .

INTRODUCTION:

An inch (plural: inches; abbreviation or symbol: in or a double prime) is a unit of

length in the imperial and United States customary systems of measurement.
Historically an inch was also used in a number of other systems of units. Traditional
standards for the exact length of an inch have varied in the past, but since July 1959
when the international yard was defined as 0.9144 metres, the international inch has
been exactly 25.4 mm.

King David I of Scotland in his Assize of Weights and Measures (c. 1150) is said to have
defined the Scottish inch as the width of an average man's thumb at the base of the
nail, even including the requirement to calculate the average of a small, a medium, and
a large man's measures

OBJECTIVES:
To use a caliper and learn how to take measurements with this instrument.
To investigate what the width, at the base of the nail, of the average 4th course
students thumb is. This average will be called Izpisuas inch.
To investigate what the difference between Izpisuas inch and a real inch is.
To calculate several statistical parameters, explaining their meaning
To represent statistical data using appropriate graphs.
To study bivariate data.
To investigate if there exists a relationship between the length of the inch and the
height
To write a report.

STEP 1 THE DATA .

This part is already done
Use the caliper and measure the width of your thumb.
Share the information in Google Drive (you have received one invitation to a
spreadsheet)

STEP 2 WORKING WITH THE DATA .

The spreadsheet we have shared is like this :

Students name Group Inchs length in mm Height in cm

Download the table

Take into account that in the first part of this work, the width is your statistical variable
and in the second part you have bivariate data and your variables are width and
height.
What kind of variable are they? Are they discrete or continuous?

STEP 3 CALCULATING STATISTICAL MEASUREMENTS.

In this section use only the column of the inch
1. Make a complete frequency table
2. Calculate median, mode, lower and upper quartile. Give an explanation about
the meaning of these numbers.
3. Determine in which percentile lies the thumb of each member of your group.
4. Draw a bar graph.
5. Calculate mean and standard deviation.
6. Draw a bar diagram.
7. What do you think about the spread? Is the mean a good representative of the
population?
8. Calculate what percentage of population is in interval ( , + )
9. What is the difference between mean, mode and median?
10. Group the data into men/women and repeat questions 5, 6, 7 and 8. Can you
see any difference between men and women?
11. What is the official inch?
12. What percentage of students in 4th course have an inch bigger than the official
inch?
13. Decide the length of Izpisuas inch and explain the reasons of your decision.
14. Calculate the absolute and relative error when considering Izpisuas inch.

In this section use both columns, width and height

15. Plot a scatter diagram (x=inchs length, y=height)

16. Study how the correlation is
o if it is high, medium or low
o if it is positive or negative, including the meaning of a positive or negative
correlation
17. Find out the equation of the regression line.
18. Plot the regression line using excel
19. Find out the coefficient of correlation
20. Make estimations and indicate their reliability.

STEP 4 THE REPORT.

Write a report explaining carefully your work. The report must include:
