THIRTY SECOND SUNDAY IN
ORDINARY TIME
Dear Parishioners,
The alleluia verse sets the tone of
todays readings: Stay awake and stand
ready, because you do not know the hour
when the Son of Man is coming. The
being ready can refer to the end of
time or perhaps directly to the hour of
our death. Either way we need to be
ready.
Our first reading tells us: Wisdom is
bright, and does not grow dim. We
need to be wise in the things of God.
There is a difference between wisdom
and knowledge. We could be
Mastermind champions but still be
foolish went it comes to knowing,
loving and serving God and neighbour.
We need to have the knowledge of the
second reading and the certainty of
what St Paul speaks of: that is, we have
the faith that tells us that Jesus died and
rose again and he will do the same for
us. St Paul thought at the beginning of
his ministry that the Second Coming of
Jesus would happen in his own lifetime,
as did others. But later he knew that
the end of time was a long way off.
During the month of November and on
Remembrance Sunday, we pray for all
who have died. We pray for all who
have died and are still dying today as a
result of war and violence.

The best tribute we can pay to victims
of war is to work for peace and
reconciliation. This would be true
wisdom. This wisdom can lead us to
ways of being awake and ready and be
prepared to do the planning for the
future. We should be like the five
bridesmaids who brought oil for their
lamp and were prepared for the long
haul.
The oil is a symbol. We are to keep the
lamp of love and hope alight! A lamp
burns with small drops of oil the
small things in our daily life:
faithfulness, words of kindness; actions
of love and concern; knowing when to
speak out or when to be silent; doing
the little things in life well and with a
generous heart. Then we will be ready
when the Lord calls.
There is the well known story of a holy
old monk sweeping up the fallen leaves
in the monastery garden when a visitor
asked him: What would you do brother,
if you knew you were to die in ten
minutes? The old monk replied: Id
carry on sweeping.

SJV PARISHIONERS REALLY HAVE
TALENT.
Thanks to all who attended our Variety
Show last Sunday, especially those who
took part and showed off their talents to
make our show a success.
We raised the sum of 592.80
SICK & RETIRED PRIESTS FUND
OF THE DIOCESE OF WESTMINSTER
Todays second collection is in support of
the Sick & Retired Priests Fund of the
Diocese of Westminster. This Fund
ensures our elderly and sick priests are
financially supported in their senior years
after a lifetime of service. Our priests
baptised us, counselled us in times of
sorrow and worry, and celebrated with us
in times of joy. Since we have received so
much from their generosity, it is now our
turn to assist them in their old age. The
fund ensures that their housing, medical,
convalescence, companionship and
spiritual support needs are met. Please be
generous. Most priests retire with modest
means. In later years their ability to live
independently can be adversely impacted
because of their declining health, mobility
or frailty. There are donation leaflets
available in the pews and at the back of
the Church. Please use this leaflet to Gift
Aid your donation. You can even use it to
set up an ongoing donation to this fund.

PARISH BAZAAR WITH GRAND DRAW

A basket for items/goods for the Parish
Bazaar Tombola is available by the pillar
in front by the Altar. We would need
bottles, toiletries and items such as
unwanted gifts suitable for the Tombola.
Also we will need cakes for our stall.
Everybody is welcome and we look

This course offers an insight into

DIOCESAN CATECHETICAL TRAINING
FOR PARISH CATECHISTS
Training session, led by Mary Crowley,
Diocesan Catechetical Adviser, for First
Holy Communion Catechists are offered at
St Peter-in-Chains, Lower Parish Rooms, 12
Womersley Road, London N8 9AE. All
catechists in the Deanery are welcome to
attend. Preparing Children for First
Reconciliation Tuesday, 14th November,
7pm-8.30pm, is about preparing children
to celebrate the Sacrament of
Reconciliation for the first time; with
reflection on last years programme.

Signs of Hope A one-day conference for
all Confirmation Catechists in the Diocese,
led by Sr Judith Russi on Saturday, 25th
November, 10am-3.30pm at the Centre for
