Participant Information Sheet

Project Title: Meds & Travel: Improving Medical Adherence

Participant Information
You are invited to take part in a research project to gather information regarding individuals who
plan to or have taken medication whilst travelling. It is important for you to understand why this is
being done and what this will involve so please take time to read the following information. If you
are concerned, wish to ask about anything regarding this study or require more information please
contact the relevant researcher or supervisor prior to taking part.

What is the purpose of the project?

This project will aid the researcher in their final year assignment at Bournemouth University, which
will be assessed at different points throughout the academic year. It involves the researcher Steven
Pickett, a final year Product Design Student designing, developing and manufacturing a product that
solves a specific challenge:

To design, develop and prototype a product that can carry enough of a single type of medication
(including medications such as contraception and antimalarials) for a young individual aged 18-24
whilst they are travelling. The product should also encourage adhearance to the medication by
making the experience of taking medication whilst travelling more pleasurable, easier to manage
and less of a taboo..

Why have I been chosen?

You have been chosen to participate in this research as it is believed your knowledge will help to
positively influence the design of a product solution that combats the problems of medication
adherence and young individuals aged 18-24 carrying medication whilst they are travelling.

Do I have to take part?

Participation is completely voluntary and refusal to participate will involve no penalty or loss of
benefits to which the participant is otherwise entitled. It is also at your liberty to withdraw at any
time up to the point where data has been processed and animalised. You do not need to give a
reason if you wish to participate however, if you choose to participate, you will be asked to sign a
participant agreement form and will be given a copy of this information sheet to keep.

What Does taking part involve?

Participation in this study may involve answering several questions on electronic or paper based
questionnaire, taking part in an interview which will be kept solely for transcribing purposes or
taking part in sensory experiments to see how individuals react to different stimuli.
Participation in this research project for data collection will last no longer than a year and travel
expenses will be negotiable when necessary but must be discussed prior to data collection. Data will
be collected and recorded on Bournemouth University premises or where deemed necessary at the
time.

If you choose to participate, it is expected for all questions to be answered truthfully and to the best
of your ability. You will also be expected to be punctual and communicate any problems. If there are
any restrictions as a result of participating or any information that may needs to be collated by
participants this should be discussed in advance.

What are the advantages and possible disadvantages or risks of taking part?

The probability of harm or injury occurring as a result of participation in this research study is
minimal. There is a low possibility some questions may cause physiological stress but every measure
has been taken to minimise this when participating.
Also, whilst there are no immediate benefits for those people participating in the project, it is hoped
that the data collected will contribute to the design of the researchers final year assignment.

Will my taking part in this project be kept confidential?

All the information that we collect about you during the course of the research will be kept strictly
confidential in accordance with The Data Protection Act 1998.
You will not be able to be identified in any reports or publications and all data relating to this study
will be transcribed if necessary and kept for three years on an encrypted hard drive or on a secure
password protected network.

How will the recorded media be used?

The media such as photographs, audio and video recordings taken during this research project will
be used only for analysis and illustration in presentations and lectures at Bournemouth University.
No other use will be made of them without your written permission, and no one outside the project
will be allowed access to the original recordings unless written permission has been granted.
