Thought I'd share this story from my Instagram here too..
I know this is going to sound crazy, but... One day about 25 years ago, I 1)_____________(to
snorkel) with my brother and I 2)_____________ (to feel) depressed. It was back when I was really
struggling as a young actor and having girl troubles. My brother coaxed my out of my cave to join him
snorkeling in La Jolla, CA where my Mom lived for awhile. We 3)______________(to float) near to
shore staring at a little octopus tucked away on the rock reef. Suddenly, I 4)____________(to feel)
something hugging me. I 5)_______________ (to think) it was my bro, because that's the kind of
brother he was, but I 6)______________(to look) up and saw him pointing at what
7)_______________(to hug) me with his eyes bugging and bubbles of laughter blasting around his
snorkel and mask. I slowly 8)________________(to turn) my head to my right and there next to my
face were the whiskers and eye of a young sea lion. I 9)_________________(to freeze). Because I
10)___________________(to hear) you never wanted to tangle with a Sea Lion because they can be
particularly fierce (they aren't called sea lions for nothing). I 11)______________(to stare) into her
(assuming it was a her) big dark brown eye trying to stay calm and relaxed. I bite seemed like a
vague possibility. Although the long whiskers, the deep brown eyes the little flap ears, said nothing
but sweetness to me. I 12)__________________(to be) still a little afraid. I asked myself if this could
actually be real. At that moment she nuzzled my face with hers. Yes, it 13)________________(to be)
real and yes she was sweet. She let me know she was a pal. Somehow she
14)__________________(to know) I really needed a hug at that moment. Or maybe she just thought
I was another sea lion. She stayed with us playfully swimming next to us and around us and came
close enough to let us touch her from time to time and then just as suddenly as she was there she
was gone.
What a gift. Good depression therapy. So... I have always had a soft spot for the Sea Lions.
